Pardon my stereotyping, but is there a lot of "rich, beautiful Vancouver people" that use the Nanny on weekends, to get to the cottage in the gulf islands? I was on the Nanny on this route once, and I noticed a lot of BMW, Mercedes, etc leaving Long Harbour. So, to be blunt, I ask: "are there a lot of rich snots who use the Q-Nanaimo?" Is the sailing full of princesses, barbi-dolls and "important" doctors & lawyers? just wondering..... there are a lot of people who use the nanny who are not the people described above. yes there are alot of higher end vehicles onboard but i would be willing to bet that as a percentage of total cars on any sailing it is no more then on route 1 or route 2. i drive a 1995 mercedes benz and go to family property on saltspring. this in no way makes me a rich west van snob.

No worries Kyle, the story of your "Spirit Fling" with the summer intern disqualified you from any possible membership in the West Van Snot Club anyways.
I think what struck me about what I perceived to be the rich-class on the Q-Nanaimo, was that I spent a week on Saltspring, seeing lots of VW-Vans (the 70's models) and lots of hippie types and just normal ordinary folk, most with English accents, who believed in a simpler & slower way of life that I was used to. Then I took the Long Harbour ferry home, and I was surprised to see all the new expensive cars and the young princesses looking very styled and exclusive. I thought to myself: were we all just on the same island together? Those people probably didn't stay at the youth hostel.....

Here I go with the boring bit's again - so I trust you can follow. Had a look at the "audited" accounts for Route 9. Now she does lose a lot of money - but they make the third largest amount in on board retail. So by getting rid of the food side and putting in Machine - I think is a big mistake - cashflow wise - that is unless the crew wages on the food retail is really high.
Quesation for all of you - How many staff are on the food retail side - forget the shops for the time been. I think they have good profit margins - but then machines don't talk back - nor do they demand hoildays & sick pay. They are always on time - unless they breakdown...
They stopped the food on a number of cross channel ferries here - replacement with bloody machines - profits down - so hot food back on - profits and service up. Seems like this is maybe a cost cutting - or here I go again (sorry) Union bashing - a way to drop union membership on vessles - re-instate the food - but with outside suppliers. (Sub contrators)

The Queen of Nanaimo is docked in berth 3 at Swartz Bay. Who would be on the Nanny doing the work that needs to be done?? Just curious. As I think her crew now would be on the Tsawwassen.
Swartz Bay sucks for trying to get photos of any of the ships in dock. I wanted to get one of the Nanny at Swartz Bay cause you dont see her that much at Swartz Bay. There is a spot where the truck ferry docks that you could get some good photos but I have enountered security people down there which piss me off cause like your really disturbing anything down there for a min or so if no trucks or down there so I really dont want to go back there to get photos. Maybe I will have to get on a ferry in the next few days to get some.

cafeteria staff on the nanaimo would be around 9-11 and this does not include cleaners.
pics at swartz bay- i would park at the gov't wharf and walk through the staff parking lot. there is a man gate on the fence there that is not looked. atleast not when i walk over to the pub for lunch if i have a long enough wait.
there would probably be a small crew of maintenance and engineers on the nanny at swartz bay right now. also the senior chief would be over there. they probably commute over in the am and back in the pm

Rumor Mill Update: I was on the Queen of Tsawwassen for her first sailing from Tsawwassen terminal during the Nanny's refit, and heard a couple talking about the hot-food rumor. They said that TC won't let the Nanny drop any more crew, in which case hot-food service would probably continue.

The Nanny at Swartz Bay, that reminds me of the FIRST time I ever saw her there. It was late summer either 1981, or 82. Anyway, I was on my usual weekend ferry trip & was waiting to go back to Tsawwassen, expecting to catch the regular "V" class ship back, when low & behold, I see the Nanny approaching! She slowly turns around & backs into berth 2, meanwhile I'm just peeing my pants in excitement, thinking that she was the next Tsawwassen bound ferry. So I watch as the last car unloads, then I see them putting up the dreaded man-bridge between the ramp & the cardeck, then I see them tying her up. I'm so much in denial at this point, that I convince myself that it's just for a short crew turnaround. I was a little kid of about 12 then & had no idea how the system worked. Finally I approach one of the terminal attendants to inquire as to what was going on with her & he informs me she just did 1-unscheduled crossing & would be tied up for the rest of the night Man, was I BUMMED.

Yip she is right next to us. I believe the crew is doing the refit at Swartz Bay. I was hoping to go next door tonight or tomorrow night and try to take some engine room shots. Might be a while before shes around again. I sailed on her 26 years ago out of Horseshoe bay.

I have just added two photos I took today of the Nanny at Swartz Bay. Took me two tries, before I decided, what the heck, I'll go in. What I mean by that is the truck ferry dock your not allowed to drive down there as I have been down there before and have been told to leave. But it dident look like anyone was there as far as security so I went down and got these two photos, which is a good spot to get photos but your not allowed there Unless you can sneak down and out with no one there. ca.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/karladelman/album?.dir=/fc78&urlhint=actn,ren%3as,1%3af,0 I put them on my yahoo page as there is only two. Last two on the page. Larger image if you want them!

If your going home in the morning she should still be there as she is suppose to be back in service with the first sailing from Long Harbour on the Saturday. So she will probably head there then.

If you need to catch up on sleep, just do what I do and sleep in the boring classes. I usually sleep in Spanish and English, and I did last year with Math. I think I'll use English tomorrow to catch up on sleep or I could go on Caffeine support, mmm...morning Coca-Cola. I just got home from a scout camp at Camp Byng, and I am bagged from yelling at Venturers and little Scouts, roughly the age of PR Queen Kid. Good thing I have patients with kids. And now I am rambling and I am going to shut up.

You dummy with your many pro days in PR, how lazy are your teachers there, and they're all on monday, but I guess there is a plus side. If you go to a party on saturday night and end up like me on my grad ski trip, then you don't have to go to school with a hangover like I did after that weekend, I think I know what you guys are thinking now after I said that.
Obviously the combination of a lack of sleep and 5 glasses of Coke is not a good combination as right now I am very hyper and that probably explains my rather crazy posts!
