I was aboard the Queen of Cowichan today during sea-trials. We departed at about five after three, and did not return till 4:30. Everything went really smoothly, and the ship will be back in service tomorrow starting with the 6:30 sailing from Departure Bay. Pictures from today can be found at the following hyperlink. pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/numatic_2000/album?.dir=/b24a(BTW, I got to blow the horn... ;D) If anyone wishes to have full size photos, please post on the forum...

Scott, Those are ALL wonderful pics! Thank you It's wonderful to have someone "on the inside" to be able to get pics of the ships when they're empty. I really appreciate your work & just want to say "Thank you" once again - keep it up! -BIFF.

Right on! Those are awesome! Does anyone find it strange that they didn't upgrade the bridge? well what I mean mostly is the bridge still has the old carpets.

Here's a couple of shots of the old Queen of Surrey bridge (which was five years NEWER than the Cowichan): members.shaw.ca/kevin.stapleton/Departure_Bay/departure_bay.html . Scroll down half way. By the way, excellent pictures. ;D

It has sounded like that for a very long time. I like the Surrey and Oak Bay's horn better they play a nice C minor chord. They didn't blow the horn on the surrey this morning when I was on her. They never seem the blow the horn on route 3.

That's awesome you recorded it. That's way better quality than my recording of her horn. I've heard her horn sound that way before, I like it when it does that because it's like how Vancouver sounds her horn. Record more whenever possible ;D

Sorry to double post guys...but....Just curious Scott...was that recording of blowing Cowichans horn recorded while you were blasting it? If so, then when you push the button that blows the horn, does it blow each horn the harder you push the button? Probably doesn't make sense so I'll try another way of explaining what I mean. Like when you push the button a third of the way down does it blow one of the horns? and then two thirds of the way down 2 horns, and then all of the way down all three horns? I've always wondered how those horns work. Oh and look at these photos of Cowichans bridge when she was in mid life, I would of thought they would of put new carpet down after this: www.pbase.com/kstapleton/image/27378388I believe this picture was taken at the Nanaimo end of the ship, I can't tell what side Scott got a picture of though, but those photos could be compared to before and after I guess.

Hey Strong Skier, how was the Queen of Surrey on your trip this weekend??? I am assuming she dident break down, lol! That's good. I like the Surrey now, the only one left with the old interior.

both trips on the surrey were wet. Going there was interesting, my stupid and hyper step-brother tried to destroy things, I sat in a long line-up for the caf, and took the entire voyage to order my dinner and eat, but in the line-up I saw a beer can tree, so that was amusing. Today I just walked around the deck but I mostly stayed at the back because it was pissing ass rain after we left Langdale. It was a good weekend at Camp Byng though. I went down to the beach with the Cubs and I saw the Coq and the Alberni in the distance. Good times at Scout Camp.
The Surrey didn't break down, and her interior still smells like a cheap hotel.

I took the sound of the horn with my digital camera while it sat on the chart table with the door to the bridge wing open, that audible electronic alarm noise was from the the radar equipment. There is a big handle just above the wheel. The harder you pull it, the louder the note, and the more notes that sound. The reason for the weird sounding of the horn was probably due to the fact the ship has been sitting for three days (# 2 end wheelhouse, btw), and the air pressure used to sound all three individual notes (C, E Flat, and G) was not correct. It sounded as if the E flat did not sound, thus sounding more like a C Chord.

on the spirits, when i was on her, she has a small toggle switch . and it only makes the usual tone. but on the Vancouver was on the run, she had this almight groan in the wheel house as the pressure built up, and then this all mighty C Minor 3 Chorded Blasts rips through the sound. she was a mighty ship.

That's weird that it's a big handle, I thought it would be a button. I remember going up on Queen of Newwestminsters bridge a few years back and asking where the horn was and the captain or mate or whoever was manning the ship that day pointed out a button that was sortof by the throttle on the right or starboard side of the ship. Hey Karl, you blew Queen of Victoria's horn, what did you have to do to blow the horn? Pull a handle or push a button?
