Apparently according to The Province Newspaper that the Spirits are getting a refit. $14 million for each ship and SOBC is first in line starting next week, and SOVI is going in 2006. It is a 3 month refit too. The changes will be getting rid of the Dogwood Carpet, Flat Screen TVs (Im assuming they will be used for the same reason they had on the Fastcats with the GPS to see where you are on the route) and the Bathrooms are being totally redone probably like the Cowichan and Coquitlams with the Automatic toilets, sinks, soap and whatever else that could be automatic ;D. Can't wait to hear the results in March 2005 of what they're gonna look like.

I didn't read anything in the Province or Sun about this, and I didn't see anything about this on the BC Ferries Website, but It would be neat if the Spirits underwent a refit, but I really hope they don't make the Interior look like the Coq or Cow. It would take away the individual style of each vessel, as mentioned in an earlier feed.

I think its good theyre giving them a refit cause it has all of the old dogwood looks inside and they look like they do need a fix up of some sort cause once the new Cs come and all the Vs are gone the Spirits would look out of date and older than the other vessels besides the Gulf Island Ferries.

It's good the spirits are being refit, they are the best ships in the fleet, the newest and the biggest, more people travel on them every day than on any other ship in the fleet. The spirits were expensive ships and should be kept looking brand spanking new. Personally i love riding on the spirits versus a v class, but i enjoy a change every now and then. The reason the v-class don;t get refit is because it's to late for them and the c-class are getting refit cause they realise that the c's will be a main part of the fleet in 10 years or so. I say keep the spirits in top condition as well as the c class and eventually we'll let the c class go so here here for the spirits.

Truth is, the longer the Spirits are off the run in the winter, the more money is saved. They use 3 times the fuel as either a V class or C class plus they carry more crew. During the slow periods just before Christmas and the period between New Years and Easter, they aren't needed traffic wise. So the more time they spend welded to the docks, the more money the company saves.

This past week the spirits were the only ships running on route1, and they were packed 95% of the time. They hold more people and more cars. they got 8.75 lanes at swartz bay on the spirit, the v's could maybe get 6.75 lanes.

I can also say the SOBC is getting a refit. It's true and there is a service notice about it on the website. It's going to be neat to go on here when she gets back and see what they have done.

Me too, I can't wait to see if they're gonna have a new theme for the interior of them or if its gonna be like what the C-Class are getting. Is anybody going on her one more time before Tuesday? (the day she goes in)

TV systems are also useful for showing the safety information (SeaBus, Fast Cats) and Local Tourist highlights (Fast Cats). Plus they add a proffessional look, I think. The ferries, from what I've read elsewhere are to recieve the new 'west coast' interior design, as seen on the Cs. This will be good for the consistancy in branding for the fleet. The only odd ball on a major route come 2008 will be the Queen of New Westminister.

The Spirit of British Columbia will be removed from service on the Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay route for its annual refit and a complete passenger services upgrade from Tuesday, January 4 to Thursday, March 17, 2005 inclusive.
As an integral part of revitalizing the fleet, the Spirit of British Columbia, built in 1993, will see all the interior passenger areas renovated. Among the many improvements will be an expanded Passages Gift Shop, an upgraded cafeteria, a redesigned buffet, renovated washrooms, reupholstered seating and new flooring and carpeting.
While the Spirit vessel is out of service the Queen of Esquimalt will be the replacement vessel from January 4 to February 6, followed by the Queen of Vancouver from February 7 to March 17. As these are smaller vessels, some overloads can be expected at peak sailing times.
BC Ferries looks forward to reintroducing the renovated Spirit of British Columbia to service with the 7:00 a.m. sailing from Tsawwassen on Friday, March 18.

I have actually been on the SOBC so many times so I wont get to go before her refit. I was on the SOVI this evening though. I just got home, was in Vancouver for the day and came back on the 9pm sailing from Tsawwassen. She is getting a new expanded gift shop like the SOVI and a bunch of other stuff. It's going to be neat to see what she looks like. Cant wait!!

Oh my god, we already explained this. The spirits need a refit to have the new ferry logo stuff put inside and to keep them in good condition. If we let them rot we will just have another v-class in 20 years.

anybody who saw the bctv news on global @ 6pm tonight saw david handjob talking about the upgrades coming to the spirits
satellite tv- if we ever get hockey back then can watch it on the ferry
satellite internet- good for business people and students.
upgraded cafeteria and seating area
a user pay lounge- says a lot of people use the buffet just to get into a quieter area and take seats from people wanting to eat in the cafeteria. this new area will have coffee and muffins. says price in $6-$7 range with this money going to improvements he is not willing to announce at this time.
upgraded pet area. maybe a room on the car deck instead of just benches

I saw that, it was interesting to see the interior of the SOVI, havent been on her for 7 years. The Spirits sure look out of date compared the new C-Class look but that will change in 3 months.
