Seems like the Queen of Cowichan is in for $34 million. I'm guessing after the Cowichan will be Oak Bay, Surrey, then finally Alberni.

I think BC Ferries missed some work finishing the Queen of Coquitlam's refurbishment. They made a maze out of the car-deck wiindows, and it does not look complete to me. It was probably due to the busy summer season coming so quick. Now that the Queen of Cowichan is in refurbishment, maybe they won't make it look incomplete.

The Queen of Alberni will have to be the next ship for it's mid life refit as she is as old as the Cowichan and Coquitlam and could sure use it! I think they should add a big piece to her passenger cabin and maybe make the ship look a little like the Cow and Coq! She is too crowded as is!!

Yes, Queen of Alberni does look like she needs it. They removed many passenger deck windows, which makes it look to plain (from the exterior). Tomorrow, I will be going on the Alberni, when I visit Long Beach. ;D

The windows from the Queen of Alberni and Coquitlam were removed to allow the life saving equipment to be deployed without being endangered from fire if the integrity of the windows became compromised. The openings on the vehicle deck cause the same concern. When you look at the ship you also need to imagine the vessel being evacuated, what is a nice ship for the passengers during normal sailings could become a nightmare as they try to evacuate. It is interesting reading the discussions and interest about the workings of BC Ferries, I will try and assist where possible. I have been travelling back and forth between the island and the mainland for the past few months. I have travelled on the Alberni, Vancouver, New Westminster, Oak Bay and Coquitlam numerous times each.
I have noticed that between the Oak Bay, Coquitlam and Alberni, the Coquitlam seems to be more cramped on the upper car deck. I find that the cars are closer to each other, and find it harder to get in and out of the vehicle. Today (Coquitlam) I had to get out through the passenger side.
Does it seem this way to anyone else since the refit? Or am I just nuts?

I took the Queen of Alberni, and Queen of Coquitlam to Long Beach and back. I did start to understand that because there are windows in both the car decks, and passenger decks are taken out for deployment of the emergency rafts. I am impressed about the Coquitlam, especially because of her sensors in the bathrooms to flush the toilets, and turn on and off the sinks. I came back in rough seas, where the ship crashed up and down at the bow. It was far too windy (well too rainy anyway) to go outside. The rain was coming at you very fast, it hurt. When I went to the Island, on the Alberni, the wind was very calm. ;D

The BC Ferries Need to take better care of thier ships, they look beutiful when they come out from refit, but after 3 months of battering rain, and Sleet and stuff like that. paint starts peeling and rust starts growing. im sure the ships would last longer it time was spent cleaning them

Yes they should take better care of the ships. Hell, if I got paid to clean the ships, well certain cleaning duties. I would do it. I noticed one trip coming back from Tsawwassen on the SOVI they had a guy going around and cleaning the outside windows on the top deck. They need more cleaners doing outside dutie like window cleaning and such as I noticed on the Spirit ships some of the windows on the main passenger deck need cleaning. I wonder how they would do that, they would need to have lift or platform on the side of the ship like those cleaners that clean the big office buildings. But yeah that is true, they look really nice when they come out of refit and have a new paint job then only a few months later rust starts showing again.

Most vessels don't have the time to be cleaned. Sure they could clean the relief vessels when their off (eg. Oak Bay, Esquimalt) but whats the point? Their not on duty enough to even get very "dirty" and their not on enough for people to see them. Something they cannot treat while the vessel is in duty (eg. exterior rust) will have to wait for refit OR night, which is rare because I highly doubt they would pay someone to treat rust on the vessels at night. They could possibly, but I doubt it, give the vessels two refits a year. They could possibly higher more workers, but it probably won't happen.

the SOVI and the SOV both have exterior pipes that allow a bio degradable cleaning solutiong and water to be piped through and clean the exterior window. and the bots need to be rotated more, so that every ship gets equal wear, and so that the same ship isn't on the same run her whole life

Seeming the Coquitlam was the first to go through the refit stage, BC Ferries was still a Crown Corperation with the Dogwood when she went in, and I think they planned to give the C-Class all a refit in 2001. I wonder what the interior would of looked like if BCF stayed the same with Dogwood and the Expo colours and all of that for a Mid Life, or would it be like it is now with the wavy carpets and wood floors expanded gift shop, or would the floors still have that classic Dogwood Style...Hmm
