I think I have to go with "Be used as a cargo vessel down south, " because then it would be still put to use, and maintained, for a while (Were talking Dominican Republic south, not Texas south)
BTW Graham: Why is there a giant sandbag, almost sinking the ship, at the stern of the Chilly-wack? Oh well, if it sinks, there goes one more Northern Vessel...

Turn it into a floating POSH hotel/restaurant during 2010 Olympics, and anchor in Squamish harbour. The wheelhouse could become the Gordo suite!

The Chilliwack is unique in her own way! I havent been on her but after I go on her July 15th I will have more to say about her! Kevin Stapleton has photos also of her in the water like that at Deas! Why do they do that anyways??? What is the purpose of it??

They put weight at one end of the ship, to lift the hull out of the water without drydocking it, so they can remove the Right Angle Drives. I guess that wasn't really thought of in the design stage, because I know they take the RADs out of the Capilano while she's sitting in Horseshoe Bay. Chilliwack is in refit, so they will obviously be taking them out to service them. www.pbase.com/kstapleton/image/27610891www.pbase.com/kstapleton/image/33938871But in regards to her future, she should still be put in service somewhere, just not in a place like the Discovery Coast route. She would make a good cargo ship for another 10 years or so.

Yeah and have the Kwuna work down at the Chemainus-Thetis-Kuper run with the Klitsa. Take the ramps/wings off the kwuna and put them on the Queen of Chilliwack.

Why would they add ramps from the Kwuna, to the Chilliwack, which is already equipped with them?

Yeah and have the Kwuna work down at the Chemainus-Thetis-Kuper run with the Klitsa. Take the ramps/wings off the kwuna and put them on the Queen of Chilliwack. Run them in tandem? I personally don't think there's enough traffic to spur on another vessel. The Klitsa has a potential of Southern Gulf Islands... maybe inter-island service?

It would be interesting to compare what the Queen of Chilliwack's maximum-capable car deck height could be, as compared to the vessels of the Seaspan-Intermodal fleet (their Seaspan Doris comes to mind when thinking of the most similar-looking ship of theirs, compared to the 'Wack).

My vote was "other". Sturdy old Basto II should go home to Norway, or any other place that appreciates her seaworthiness; and can maintain her Z-drives properly. Our soon to be ex-Chilliwack is a sound boat, but we could have built a better version to BCF specs. Tak! Norge, and thanks for the memories.

Do we really have any reason to think that the Chilliwack is going anywhere? We know it's not suitable for the northern routes, but has BC Ferries given any indication that it couldn't end up full time Earls Cove-Saltery Bay? Sorry if I've missed something.

As far as I remember, from that article in the Sun that i read about 5 or 6 months ago, TC required that the three single-compartment northern-vessels simply be taken off of those northern runs by 2009; nothing was mentioned beyond that in the article. I'll try to find some time soon to get to the central library and check their newspaper archive for The Vancouver Sun article that I read.

We have different classes of ships up there, and this one has done it´s job but it´s also way past it´s "best before" date. So I assume, it will simply be scrapped after it´s done with BCF.

Ideally the Chilliwack would be gone because of TC's pressure.

They could certainly make her more versatile by ripping out the live-aboard crew-quarters

Interesting to see what the Chilliwack would look like without the windows blocked out by crew-quarters, and necessary deck-plan changes made to accomodate them.
