Looks to me like BC Ferries are getting away from single ended ships, cept for the new Northern Boats. Turn around is much faster with double enders, and I think that when the original boats were built they couldn't get the speed they wanted with double enders.

Does anyone know what BC Ferries plan to replace the B class is?

The B-Class will be around for another 10-15 years, because the New Westminster and Burnaby will be upgraded like the Nanaimo, so they can provide service for just a bit longer. But so far, they've not said a word about what they're going to replace them with. I just hope they don't plan to replace the Nanny and Burnaby with an open car deck ferry, like the Skeena Queen.

That would be bad in rough weather. The New Ferries Should be something like the WSF Jumbo Mark II Class only with a bow door. Could you imagine a open deck ferry like the Skeena Queen making it's way through a southeaster in the Strait of Georgia pounding the waves...Oh Yeah the Comox Queen aka Tenaka did that once cept it had a lifted bow

There is a photo of what the new ship to replace the Queen of Prince Rupert will look like. It was in the Saturday's Time Colonist. It was an artists drawing of what the ship would look like. Sort of a new Queen of Prince Rupert type ship with the looks of the new Super C's but single ended with a bow visor.

Go to this thread to see article & photo... ferriesbc.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=newferries&action=display&thread=1156396569As for a new generation of V's, we already have them - they are called Spirits. Although they are much different than the 1960's built Seven Sisters, they do have a lot in common. When they were designing the Spirits I am sure they were looking to build a new and improved V, and they would do all they slicing and dicing before they first entered service. BTW, does anyone know what nick-name was given to the SoBC while it was being pieced together?

This is the thing...
We transport people can never have enough toys.
Bring Em On!
I'm currently imagining a stretched and lifted Spirit class... just to reaffirm my insanity and because it's fun, however most importantly because BIGGER IS BETTER!
Hey when we invent warp drive we can name one Enterprise and send it into space!
Go Trek!

A "V" Class ferry with a Spirit-styled bridge and funnel would be neat...but at this point in time it's not needed.

BTW, does anyone know what nick-name was given to the SoBC while it was being pieced together? I believe it was the "Queen of Lego", p. 139 "Ships of Steel" (McLaren & Jensen) I see Jim that they used your brother's drawing of the Island Princess (With prior approval of course! )

Because they are being replaced by this Plus the Fact that they are 60s Built Vessels and are getting old. They're 40+ Years Old It's time for them to pass the Torch to the Super C Class Ships Just like the Queen of Tsawwassen will pass the torch to this And the Queen of Prince Rupert will pass the torch to this

Now can someone tell you and me why that name was given? About the Island Princess - do you mean the cruise ship or the ferry now named the NIP? I do know that my brother did drawings of it before and after its surgery.

Jim,
I'll keep the answer to myself for now.........maybe a hint?
I commuted to Vancouver when they were being built and remember driving by the S of V.I. many times, at one point the unpainted funnel just sitting there on the pavement and later seeing her promenade deck raised on blocks dockside.
As for the drawings, I was referring to the before and after drawings (Side by side) of the ferry Island Princess (Later, as we know, she was re-named North Island Princess). It's "Slice and dice" was featured as well, along with your brother's drawings.

"Queen of Lego"
Named so, because the Spirit ships were built in pieces, by different yards in different cities, and the finished components were joined together, much like you would do with Lego pieces.

So there we have the story of the 'Super V Class' aka 'Spirit class', arguably the finest vessels in the fleet today, and dare I say, even when the Super Coastal boats arrive. The first Super V, the SoBC, was nick-named the Queen of Lego for the reasons given above by 'Nanaimo' and the hints dropped by Darren and me.
Probably the last big vessels we will ever see built here in BC as a ship building industry continues to morph into a ship repair and maintenance industry.

What is a b class..??

The B's are actually V's that are ever so slightly different. I call them all the Seven Sisters. The V's are the Queens of Vancouver, Saanich, Esquimalt, and the now departed Q of Victoria from which the V class gets its name. The B's are the Q's of Nanaimo, Burnaby and New Westminster. The B is for Burnaby class. BTW, the New Westminster is now usually considered to be a V. Just think of them all as the Seven Sisters.

You could Also Call them the Spaulding Seven. Or even the Six Sisters Now that the Victoria is gone from the fleet I guess that means the V in "V" Class could Be changed from Victoria to Vancouver

The point is, we all know that the ships come from the same "family." All BC Ferries from the 1960s have the same basic design, but each have a design modification of some sort, whether it's as big as a stretch and lift, to something small like a different funnel base or Car-deck windows.
