Southern Gulf! I love it there, and the ferries running through there.

Naniamo and South, that is where my range is because I do not feel like making a huge road trip in one day, that would be too much for me.

Yeah, me too, I voted Nanaimo-Victoria-Vancouver, as I have never been on route 30 before.

I say we should get a tour of the Carrier Princess or the Pacificats, or Albion Ferries Coho, ect... That would be cool!

Maybe we could keep some tours for the Summer so otherts on the board have a better chance at going thats why I voted for one of Powell River's Routes

Perhaps, Queen of Tsawwassen, while it's on Earls Cove-Saltery Bay? It would have to be on specific dates in the summer time.
Or something a little more local for us lower mainlanders like something out of Tsawwassen, like I suggested, the Southern Gulf Islands? Or on the Queen of Capilano or anything out of HSB? Anyone agree?

Tsawwassen is about as far as I'm willing to go. But as much as I would like to, I wouldn't want to go out to the Jervis Inlet route due to the costs associated with getting out there and back, and the amount of time it would take. Anything out of Vancouver Island, same thing as the Powell River area Ferries. But if I happen to be out there, I would make an effort to go as far as Courtney or Victoria.

How 'bout route 30, then tranfer to Route 2, or vice-versa? Anyone want to try?

It looks to me like we're going on a Victoria-Nanaimo-Vanouver tour.
If you have not voted, and wish to go on a tour, please vote now.

Do we have any particuliar dates in mind for the tour?

Well, the only thing holding me back from the tour is, it's going to cost about 100 bucks for the ferry (in total), and then there's gas, and probably at least one meal. So that would come to a grand total of approximately $150. All that for a day cruise on a ferry? As much as I would like to, I don't think that would be a very logical thing for me to do. But if you guys still want to do it no matter what, go for it!

How do we get from Duke Point to Departure Bay? Car. No other way. There is an express bus that goes from Duke Pt to Nanaimo Downtown. Then catch the transit bus from there to Departure bay.

I'm good for routes 2, 3, and all others south of those. How do we get from Duke Point to Departure Bay? Car. No other way. Transit... There's no comparison between the cost of a car on the ferry, and the cost to walk-on... The obstacles us foot-passengers face on either side of a ferry route pale in comparisson to the cost of bringing a vehicle. In the case of Duke Point, the BC Transit route #8, "Southside Loop", is only around a $10 cab ride from the terminal... And how much would you be paying to bring a car with you? What if we all did the Milk run on the Nanny?? I voted for SGI, and I think the Nanny would be Ideal. Park your car at Tsawwassen (or Long Harbour; or Swartz Bay, and tranfer from route 5 to 9), and the round-trip cost is only around $17; when on the milk run, that cost includes 6 hours on the ship (don't worry, there are other options on route 9 if you don't want to be aboard for 6 hours ). You folks really have to see the renovated Queen of Nanaimo for yourselves; it's quite a sight to see such a new and modern interior on a B-Class.

There is an express bus that goes from Duke Pt to Nanaimo Downtown. Then catch the transit bus from there to Departure bay. I didn't realize that there are any foot-passenger options from Duke other than a cab; that would be much easier and presumably cheaper, as it cost me $40 from Duke Pt. to Downtown Nanaimo (one-way) by cab (before I knew about the bus route).

Yeah there's that idea of the shuttle bus, but we would end up in Horseshoe Bay, and my car would be at Tsawwassen. I just don't want to deal with transit, because to be honest, I have little patience with it. So I think I would pass on that trip, unless we just did a round trip on Route 30, but I'm pretty sick of any ferry on that route by the time we get to the other end anyway.

Yeah there's that idea of the shuttle bus, but we would end up in Horseshoe Bay, and my car would be at Tsawwassen. I just don't want to deal with transit, because to be honest, I have little patience with it. Can't blame you on that one! Unfortunately that's why transit is so awful around here (and most of North America): BC Transit / Translink prey on captive audiences who can't afford to care about comfort, and therefore very few, if any, new riders start using the system. With no rise in ridership, there's no justification to expand comfort, let alone service, and you're back to square one. This problem can only get worse before it gets better, such as in Translink's current situation: U-pass (universal transit passes manditory for students of UBC and SFU to purchace) was introduced, clogging an already grossly over-taxed system, and those of us using the system out of necessity are now in competition for elbow room with students who pay pennies on the dollar compared to what everyone else pays. Don't get me wrong, the system has to improve somehow, and this certainly is a sure-fire way to get more riders, and therefore better service, but waiting for new busses and trains starts to get even more unbearable. Anyway, that's my rant for the evening . So I think I would pass on that trip, unless we just did a round trip on Route 30, but I'm pretty sick of any ferry on that route by the time we get to the other end anyway. -Exactly why I prefer our coastline as compared to, say, the English Channel's coastline: more scenery! (just to begin with) -Exactly why I prefer route 1 over routes 2 or 30.

I would gladly ride foot passenger, there's no comparison. I didn't know. The bus route is actually a ways away from the terminal (short cab ride), but the cost pales in comparisson. I am interested in hearing more about this shuttle bus that was mentioned, though. Speaking of transit, route 30 is a better option when it comes to getting to Nanaimo the earliest for me simply because it's literally impossible to catch the first boat on route 2 out of HSB when taking transit from anywhere east of Burnaby or south of the Fraser River.

I would only do route 30 cause I am sick of the other 2 routes and I on the island so that would be bit difficult to do that seeing most people are from the mainland. But I do plan to the Esquimalt and New West in the next few weeks on route 30.

An idea: Take route 30 over, transfer to the Quinsam/Bowen Queen, tour that boat (don't get off at Gabriola) then take route 30 or route 2 back. Tour route 30 vessel(s)

brilliant idea but the members who don't own a car would need a ride to the Nanaimo Harbour Terminal
