There appears to be two types of cable Ferries. One that uses a tight overhead cable - good for short distance, the arm is held off the side - port side it appears, and one that picks and holds a cable and the winchs on land pull it across. This is what they use on the South Coast. The cable is very thick and therefore drops down about 2 - 3 meters - enought space for small craft to pass over the cable. The safety part of this is that the cable is fixed to the vessel, plus there enough movement in it to counter act against wind and currents.
Karls photo's are great - that is sort of a half way to what we have here. I have been told that Cable Ferries are very popular in Euorpe - but mainly on the big lakes here and go way back to the Victorian area - that makes them very old - a lot older than the Mill Bay.

The Mill bay is not making money because of her route, give her a little stretch and a new route and she will make some money. She might be good running Swartz bay to Saturna-, I've noticed there is no ferry running to piers island but there are roads on it.

Most people on Piers Island live by the water and have boats they take to the government dock at Swartz Bay. There would be no need for a ferry service to Piers Islands as probaby no one has a vehicle on that island. They have boats instead!

I see, but what about the other islands, the Mayne and Bowen are to be retired very soon.

Yeah that is true, but I dont think the Gulf Islands residents would want a small little ferry like the Mill Bay running to the islands as she is alot smaller than the Bowen and Mayne Queens. She would probably take about 90 mins just to reach Saturna as she only goes like 12knots!

They still have about 10 more years then they are going to be retired according to the Ferry Terminal personaly I think the Mayne is the first to go she does the most work and the Bowen will be retired 1 or 2 years after

Get another engine for the Mill Bay and she will go a bit faster, and a stretch to 20 cars and she will be a bit more reliable. As for my little kitten, she likes to play with a kinder egg ball, the container that holds the surprise, She kicks it around as though it were a ball, and she can run like lightning.
Back to mill bay ferry topic, there should be a bigger vessel on the run when the Malahat is closed, one of the Super Century classes could run it. Although the route is useless, there is a shop in Brentwood by the ferry dock that relies on ferry trafic for it's merchandise. The Mill bay side of the inlet could have a carpark placed near it, Brentwood bay doesn't have any room, but has anyone seen the carpark on the Nanaimo Harbour dock? Brentwood Bay could have a carpark like that, then there will be enough traffic to make sure that a new vessel is put on the route. Some people don't want to go up the malahat to drive up island, although it is very scenic, but it is not very nice up there when it is overcast and rainy, the clouds act as fog up there. M.V Klitsa could run the Mill bay route and M.V Mill bay run the Chemainus to Thetis and Kuper islands.
p.s why do you call Klitsa Kiltsa? whatever your name is, I cannot remember.

I know it wasn't, anyway, Mill bay deserves a new route, she has reliability in her, but it is hidden from sight with her current run.

Harry, how about this: scrap metal? I can't see how you can admire a ship (or boat...) build before your parents, and a small one too. If it was in your lifetime, like the Spirits or Intermediates, that's another story, but a '56? Anyways, the Mill dummy is too old to stretch; all the "V" Class vessels were stretched within 15 years of their construction. The steal is way too old to be fondled with thus the Mill Bay cannot handle any demand on any route in the fleet besides its useless selves. A "Super Century" ferry on that route? Please...get real. That route will probably NEVER have a demand for over 20 cars, I don't even think the route is shorter in distance than taking the highway.... The bottom line is: the Mill dummy is a ol' piece of crap.

not to get offensive, but i think there is a place for the mill bay, so the next time the highways closed and you have to go from nanaimo to Victoria, ill let you know how un needed the Mill bay is.

The cable ferry idea is a good idea. The Mill Bay isn't worth keeping when there are boats like the Bowen and Mayne that are much more versatile and manoeverable. One of the two towns, Brentwood Bay or Mill Bay, should buy the ship and either sink it as a reef or turn it into a floating fish and chip stand. The mural on the side can read "Vancouver Island's most beautiful fish and chip restaurant"
I've said no such thing about the Klitty or Kiltsa. I am firmly biased towards the Central and Northern Island Routes.

The Mill bay was built after my Dad's birth(1950) and my Mum's birth was one year after it was built(1957).

Ok, no stretch, but she is useFULL, not useless and is a nice vessel, It will be quite good to hand it in to a museum, although I might buy it myself and use it as a houseboat.

Well, the only other idea I would have for that little ferry is to have it run with the Cappie on the Bowen run on overloads, but that would probably create more havoc in Horseshoe Bay with 6 ships using those 3 berths this summer. Another idea would be to try it going to Gambier and Keats Island if they ever decided to have a car ferry run there, but the residents probably definitely would not want a car ferry to go to those Islands because they're so small, and plus it means building 2 more docks on those Islands unless they moved the ones from Mill and Brentwood Bays which would probably be cheaper to just build new ones there. I dunno man, I can't see the Mill Bay doing any other route by itself anytime soon, unless BC Ferries decided to keep it just a tad bit longer till the new minor ferries come around and have it run in tandem as so you say and help out the other smaller ferries when overloads occur. But then again, when she needs parts, there's a long delay because they have to come all the way from England. It really looks like that ferries' days are numbered, not to upset you or anything. I would probably miss it too a bit if it sits around like the Sidney does now thinking "that ferry used to carry vehicles and passengers" but you would never know now.
