This is an interesting article I came across tonight. It's from over two years ago, and talks about a new Seabus being introduced to connect Bowen Island to Ambleside and then to Waterfront. The pilot project should have started a year ago - I guess it didn't! I haven't heard anything further about this, so I guess it's either on the back shelf or in the garbage can.
However, the article also talks about how some mayors want to see more ferries for public transit.. examples of connecting Richmond to Delta, Ladner to Steveston, and maintaining an Albion - Fort Langley ferry (maybe passenger only). This was just talk back then, and I haven't heard anything about it recently, so I guess it's just still an idea. A good one, I think.
A while back I mentioned that I thought that there is potential to use the Fraser River as a "marine highway" (just like 120 years ago), connecting communities like Surrey, Maple Ridge, Fort Langley, Langley, Mission, Delta, Port Coquitlam, New Westminster, Ladner, Steveston, the Airport, Annacis Island, etc. It's hard to drive between a lot of these places in a timely manner, and to improve driving, governments have to spend a lot of money to build more bridges and pave more roads. But if we had a good fleet of little aluminum "ferry buses" running up and down the river - wouldn't that be a good, fast, economical, and environmenally friendly way of getting around and getting more people off the roads?
I'm encouraged that some of those in charge are at least thinking along these lines... or were thinking along these lines:) It's two years later and I haven't heard very much at all, except that maybe a new Seabus will be arriving next year??
