I cant seem to find the thread about this before but I was wondering what are some good places to go on the Queen Charlottes??? Me and Scott are heading up on Saturday and wont be on the Charlottes till Monday. We only have a day but a full day seeing we will be there at 6am. We are gonna take the Kwuna so are there any cool areas on both islands??? And how long does it take to drive from Skidegate up to like Masset??? Info would be great!

I gather that you are going to have a car with you? I takes about 1 hour and twenty minutes to drive to Massett. Tack on another 30 minutes to drive out to Naikoon Provincial Park in the Tow Hill - North Beach area east of Masset. That side trip is recommeded. Other options are to visit Gray Bay on Moresby Island about 20 km south of Sandspit, and check out balance rock on the beach just a km or so north of Skidegate Village. Another recommended trip is to go out to Rennell Sound on the west coast of Graham Island. This is on the wild Pacific side. You will not have adequate time to do that trip as it requires at least one full day. Here is what I would like to see you and Scott do: 1 - get a really nice pic of the QPR outbound from Skidegate Channel at just after 11:00 am Monday morning. A good view should be possible from beaches between the Skidegate ferry landing and the Haida village of Sidegate. 2 - Try to hike to Kwuna point to get a really nice view of the Kwuna passing by. 3 - On your northbound trip on the QPR out of Port Hardy on the evening of Saturday, June 2nd, you should pass the NorAd in the middle of Queen Charlotte Sound. Take pictures (you may need a good telephoto lens if she is far off). For more see this thread: ferriesbc.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=1175873701and this map for photo vantage points: Here's hoping you have a great trip and the sun shines most of the time.

Yes we will have a car and we hope to see the Nor Ad leaving Port Hardy. How long does it take to get to Kwuna Point?? We will definately head over on the Kwuna and check out that point and Grey Bay would be neat to see. Then just roam around the main island for bit!

The photo posted here is a Google Earth screen shot. The Alliford Bay Bay ferry dock is visible at the lower left side of the peninsula, and Kwuna Point is at the top (north) end of the peninsula. Looks like a road goes almost all the way. Should be possible to drive/walk to the point or beach to the south west of the point in 10 or 15 minutes. Should be first rate spot to catch the MV Kwuna pass by. This is also likely a good spot to look for fossils. This part of QCI is a wonderful place for students of Jurassic paleontology to explore.
