WSF has a news release today on their plans for the Hood Canal Bridge closures this summer. They are replacing half of the bridge this summer because it is getting pretty old. This is the half that wasn't destroyed in the windstorm 20-30 years ago. They will run Port Townsend-Keystone route almost 24 hours, 4:45am will be the first sailing, 12:30am will be the last. They will also run the two boat schedule almost all day. The Spokane will also be moved to the Bremerton-Seattle route due to traffic that will go around Hood Canal to the south. WSF will put a Issaquah 130 on the Edmonds-Kingston route (most likely the Kitsap, already on the Bremerton route currently) while the Spokane is away. Could be interesting as the Edmonds-Kingston route gets some pretty major backups on summer weekends, and this is with the Jumbos on the route.

I wonder why they aren't going to use the Evergreen State on the Edmonds-Kingston route along with the Kitsap during this time. At least that would help with the backups. -- LB

what do you think the Port Townsend route will be like on Friday afternoons??? Lots of waits? We might be going down to Washington State in August and if we do we will take the ferry to Anacortes from Sidney then drive to Keystone and take the Port Townsend ferry that day so we can get to Port Angeles that night! I know your thinking why not just take the Coho! But the reason is I wanna go on the ol steel electrics and besides Anacortes route is more scenic than the Coho route!

They can't run three boats on the Edmonds-Kingston route due to the single slip at Edmonds. They are in the middle of planning a new two slip terminal that will eliminate some of the conflicts at the current terminal. There is a railroad crossing right at the entrance to the dock, which is very busy crossing, and it is very near downtown Edmonds which causes conflicts. WSF is planning the same thing at Mukilteo so they can run three boats there during the summer.

they did run three boats once the once ran one of the Steel Electrics with a 130 otherwise you can say you can't run three boats on Southworth Fauntelroy, even with the one slip at Edmonds in heavy traffic and a vessel hasn't departed yet they have to slow down a little ways out.

The bridge closed on Thursday night. Read that there was a 90 minute wait out of Keystone, and a three hour wait out of Mukilteo this afternoon. Would have been better off driving around. The Kitsap is on the Edmonds-Kingston route, the first time I have ever heard of an Issaquah class there. The Spokane was also moved to Bremerton-Seattle run. The Edmonds-Kingston should have less traffic because a lot of people used the route to go over the Hood Canal Bridge. The fun part is 4-5 years down the road when they have to close the bridge for 8 weeks to replace pontoons. Maybe they will have ferry service across Hood Canal? They did that when the bridge went down in the storm in the late 70's.

There was another time recently where WSF used an Issaquah-class ferry on the Edmonds-Kingston run. When the Puyallup was temporarily transferred to the Seattle-Bainbridge for a few weeks a few years ago, WSF put the Chelan (and the Quinault) on the route.
As for ferry service across Hood Canal, there are plans to use passenger-only ferries when the bridge closes. The state determined that using car ferries wasn't feasible due to the permits required to build docks.
The Lofall dock isn't there anymore. The South Point dock was mostly intact when I went by there in 1994.

Well we will actually be taking the Keystone to Port Townsend route next Saturday! A week today! Shouldent be too bad as we are just going from Anacotes to Port Angeles that day so that gives us lots of time! Why do they call waits by hours and not sailings??

Yes, they do waits by how long, not sailings. WSF's system isn't as good as BCF's. It usually isn't up to date either.

The second closure wasn't as long as expected. Bridge re-opened on Tuesday night (was scheduled to re-open Thursday morning).
