According to the Seattle papers, the WSF plan to upgrade the Eagle Harbor maintenance yard will be delayed in order to draft a additional environmental impact study. Some of the local folks in Winslow are delighted with this delay according to the press. One wonders if these delays are actually based on environmental concerns or are they being planned by land speculators who would like to see the maintenance facility closed and the land used for expensive condos and homes???

I'd go with the latter. Many people around Eagle Harbor have been complaining about the noise of the ferry facility for a long time, having somehow failed to notice its presence when they (the complainers) moved in. Come on, folks... WSF has been occupying the site since 1961 that *I* know of, and it was the former site of Commercial Ship Repair, which had been in place for decades (and in fact did the lift-jobs on the Steel-Electrics in 1957-1958).

Barnacle, what can I say, it is Bainbridge Island. All they seem to care about is money in their wallets and not pony up for their problems they complain about.

And prior to that a shipyard dating back to the 1800's. You wonder when they woke up and realized there was a shipyard there...

What type of maintenance work is done at Eagle Harbor rather than at a commercial yard? Do they paint the topside of vessels there? I have often walked through the park located just above the yard in Winslow and have never noticed noise or air pollution as being a problem. To me it looks like land speculators would like to grab the property at modest cost to build high priced homes and condos!!

Eagle Harbor is capable of doing anything a "major" shipyard is capable of doing except an actualy haul-out or major steel work--and I wouldn't bet against major steel work. A lot of the time, repairs are done at the yard when actual shipyard time and personnel aren't required--for instance, installation of new equipment on the bridge, maintaining the sprinkler systems on the car decks, painting interiors... repairs of exterior paint are sometimes conducted at Eagle Harbor, but a full paint job (complete descaling etc.) will go to a commercial yard.
(edit: continuing on...) I suppose some people could complain about the cost of keeping up a mini-shipyard, but on the other hand, compare to the cost of emergency call-outs for a commercial outfit or that of the other DOT equipment shops. Those snowplows don't maintain and operate themselves. ;D

I'm curious to know if it would be possible to do maintenance in Bremerton since you got the shipyard there? (Sorry I am thinking crazy, but it just might work)

Bremerton is a navy (military) shipyard and is not open to commercial work. One needs a high level security clearance to enter the place.
