I'm a passionate person.......so most things I do/say come across as heavy-handed. that's fair comment. oops, I hijjacked the thread-topic again, Marilyn will be sending the US Air National Guard my way.......... I´m passionate as well, and honest - well too honest sometimes I think :-) You won´t get the US Air National Guard - just the Kalakala for you - just here.. Btw - Marilyn has some new design ideas, and I have received mails from some institutions - well, permissions for use of photos and stories, so I can tell you the site is in progression and it´s really fun to work on it

Well there's 2 things I've learned about the Kalakala from the new website:
1) it really does look like a silver slug
2) it's pronounciation. I had thought the name was pronounced like "Cal", as in "california". But it's more like "Cull'.....so it would be "Culla Culla".

Well, here´s the text which is to find on some old postcards of the ship. Note the part "virtually unsinkable" eeh.. sounds familiar ? Well, it was once unsinkable - when it was put on land in Alaska

Probably both of them - who knows with these Indian slangs... Reminds me in the discussion of how "Tsawwassen" is pronounced on the same forum, different thread. How so often in life, it seems that it´s not always a cause of either this, or that - but could be both. There are simply both versions found on the net.

Probably both of them - who knows with these Indian slangs... Yeah, those darn indians, with their hard-to-understand Hindi language... Why don't they just learn english?!? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don´t know, perhaps they struggle as well with the English language as we Europeans are doing ? I have been looking around and I found these two versions of the pronounciation, although the one shown on the postcard´s back side seems to be more common.

I always pronounced it "Ka-lak-a-la-ka' but now I realise that is wrong!

Pronounciation Is really Hard Like Tsawwassen for example What is the True way to say in Che-wassen Tah-wassen, or Saw-wassen. Tah-wassen is the More Generic Name but Saw-wassen is a bit more acurate cause I think the "T" in Tsawwassen might be silent.

Heh, heh, I think we went over this *eye twitches* It is pronounced Tah, not Sah - A ways back there was a thread posted by Chris, and we discussed this, and we decided that it is pronounced Tah, not Sah, and definatly not Chah.

Okay before this gets out of hand if we had a time machine to go back to the people who named it Tsawwassen we would find out how they said it. But "Back to the Future" isn't real or any of those other movies and shows with the Sci-Fi invention known as the time machine so were stuck forever with the debate and I still can't decide. Then again maybe the natives said Tah-wassen but you never know

Even though I think it is Tah-Wassen, When I was in the cafeteria on her, the announcement said "Welcome aboard the Queen of Sawwassen, etc etc" (The really annoying women voice!) so, I really don;t know!

For some reason I think the woman on the announcements is Deborah Marshall. Could be wrong but I might not. LOL!!

Just to bring this - rather infamous for some - topic up again, Marilyn has re-designed the www.kalakalamania.com website, and as well we did collect some more information, photos etc. including some stuff that wasn´t on the net before. Enjoy the re-designed website, in case of some critic though, please use the IM - system.

According to a recent viewing of the new redesigned website, I have decided that the Kalakala has one of the smallest pilothouses known to mankind. I say this because the Nimpkish has a pretty small one, and this one is about half the size.

I would say it's about ten feet across (I've only been up there once) but only the aft half was usable due to the downard curvature of the forward side. Also, if you tried to look down at the bow, you'd be looking through something like six inches of glass because of the angle of the window. But that's no big deal; the forward end of the cabin obscured the actual bow anyway, so you were docking by braille at best. Awesome piece of sculpture, yes, but a complete triumph of form over function.

I think the new look to the website is very nice, very professional and easy to navigate. There is alot of good information and pictures on it.
Speaking of the Kalakala, any news on the ongoing progress of the attempt to restore her?

There has not been going on anything on the official website www.kalakala.org and as well the owner who had once very ambitious plans, has gone silent. As far as I know from others whom we are in contact with, the ship deteriorates more and more down there, at Tacoma Hylebos Waterway. There has not been any further restoration work been done, since the ship left Lake Union. If you are interested, just compare the photos I have taken onboard the Kalakala last December and compare them with the ones that were taken when the ship was still at Lake Union. Marilyn and me are as well courious for information - what will happen with the ship in the future but all we got was negative answers and I do not want to be the horrible pessimist here but I do think, if there's not anyone with the big $$$ taking an interest, it will face a "San Mateo" alike fate. Have finished the two models of the ferry now as well: ferriesbc.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=photos&action=display&thread=1168546488

Cascade, does the "where is it" refer to, "where does the project stand financially to finish", or "where is it physically?"
Just asking because I figured it was the former, in which case I will ask, where is it physically? The website shows it to be located at 47°15'3.15"N, 122°25'55.50"W, or 47°15'38.10"N, 122°25'54.44"W, but when I google either of those locations, there is no sign of her.
Now, I recognize the google images might be out of date, and she might be there, or is she at a different location?
