As with bc ferries fleet, Coho is getting older as well... it is the same age as some of our v class ships? She is maintained much better!
And she still has her fairbanks engines, these must be getting hard to find parts for, Is thier any plans for replacement?
As she runs an international run, she must meet ALL solas requirements, not the watered down exemptions that TC lets bc ferreis run under.

Coho - are also getting spare parts off the Queen of Sidney. Yes SOLAS 90 - hm.......I wonder how much that would cost and would it been the death of the Coho........ I've often wondered, particularly of late, exactly how much longer the Coho is going to last. She's 47 years old now, and since Mrs. Acheson passed away and left the company in a trust to the Oregon State University (Where she also bequethed 21 million for a school of veterinary medicine osufoundation.org/givingopportunities/facultysupport/endowedpositions/theloisbachesondeanofveterinarymedicine/)what exactly they're going to do with it as the ferry gets older and harder to repair.

That type of bequest to a University (of all things) sounds like some poor estate planning to me.
I wonder if the OSU knew it was going to become the owner or trustee of a ferry service?
Would the company's assets have market value that OSU could eventually realise? Or would there be a buyer that OSU as trustee could sell the ferry service to? Or, perhaps most likely, she's left a complicated trust-agreement that ties the University's hands and makes them maintain a white elephant......

As with bc ferries fleet, Coho is getting older as well... it is the same age as some of our v class ships? She is maintained much better! She runs less, and with less stress on the ship; I don't know if ships accrue "milage" but I'm sure the Coho wouldn't clock in as high as the Tsawwassen.

The fast cats would have to pass solas 90 seeing that they were built after it.. the access to the vehical deck was limited on crossings..... a big complaint to by the users! And they are twin hull so stability and damaged stability is great.. Aslo on the PA to vic run the log factor is less (more flushing action)... as well as the wake factor not an issue, but i would imagine they would run much slower than design speed to save fuel.
just another thought.... maby Vic to Seattle? the long run woul let a fast ferry get its speed advantage

Semi-Trucks are frequent riders on the COHO, so Fast/Slow cats would not be suitable for Port Angles and Victoria. The four hour crossing time for Seattle to Victoria was kind of the killer for the last operator?
With the new diesel engines, parts should be easier. The electric drive motors might be the next big replacement. With proper maintenance, any ship that size can last a long time as the hull doesn't get as much stress as would a tanker would, due to its length?
