BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) - An advisory committee on state ferry rates has been disbanded while state transportation officials seek other ways of involving the public and gauging sentiment.
The action, reported Thursday by the Kitsap Sun, means the end of the 20-member Tariff Policy Committee that was formed in the early 1990s with representation from labor, business, transit agencies, passengers and other interested groups to recommend fare changes to the state Transportation Commission.
The tariff panel recommended a 2.5 percent general fare increase, but on Jan. 17 the commission voted for a 4 percent boost - and dismissed the committee, which fulfilled a mandate under state law for the ferry system to seek comment from riders and advisory committees before changing fares.
