EVERGREEN STATE sails past Port Townsend. She says to the QUINAULT: "Your former Marin County workmate will be with you again shortly". EVERGREEN STATE nears arrival in the San Juans. EVERGREEN STATE arrives Anacortes. EVERGREEN STATE at Anacortes. One stage of post-CATHY-dockslamming service restoration is complete.

And it looks like the Issaquah or Kitsap (probably the Izzy) will be back at Vashon tomorrow.

CATHLAMET at north slip at Clinton. Whidbey folks are taking last chances in collecting Vashon Island souvenirs (Beachcombers, et al) aboard the ISSAQUAH. ISSY leaves Clinton, CATHY on trials. Normal assignment at Clinton with the CATHLAMET and KITTITAS. Future assignments for this run. This run is slated in getting two of these! ISSAQUAH unloads at Clinton for the last time. ISSAQUAH says goodbye to Clinton. CATHLAMET back in service! ISSAQUAH heads south.

The exchange between the EVERGREEN STATE and NISQUALLY is complete. NISQUALLY says goodbye to the San Juans. NISQUALLY (MENDOCINO) back in Port Townsend alongside her Marin County workmate QUINAULT (REDWOOD EMPIRE). Another stage of post-CATHY-dockslamming service restoration is complete.

I wonder which boat on the Vashon route will be replaced: The Tillikum (for maintenance) or the Sealth (perhaps back to the San Juans)

Damaged ferry resumes route
By Kaitlin Manry Herald Writer MUKILTEO - A week after the Cathlamet crashed into the Mukilteo ferry terminal, destroying part of a dock, the ferry on Friday evening was back again plying the waters of Puget Sound.
Washington State Ferries spent about $180,000 repairing the boat and plans to spend another $700,000 replacing the portion of the terminal the Cathlamet tore apart, according to spokeswoman Susan Harris-Huether.
The cause of the crash, which tossed passengers to the deck, is still under investigation.
The Cathlamet's crew tested negative for drug and alcohol use, but the captain is scheduled to remain on administrative leave until an internal investigation is complete, Harris-Huether said.
Workers at Vigor Marine in Everett spent eight days working virtually nonstop repairing the vessel, said Joe O'Rourke, senior vice president of business development for the Vigor Companies. They replaced a 15-by-4-foot section of the hull that was punctured in the crash and also replaced 15 feet of guardrail, Harris-Huether said.
Seven steel frames that support the hull were twisted out of shape and needed to be straightened.
"It's just like with your car," O'Rourke said. The crash has "basically taken the metal out of its original shape. Repairs sometimes (involve) cutting steel and replacing them; sometimes working with metal to bend and hammer it into its original position."
Vigor Marine only repaired damage the ferry sustained in the crash and did not fix any mechanical problems.
"Had there been a mechanical problem with the boat, we probably would have repaired that, but at this point in time, nothing points to that," Harris-Huether said, stressing that investigation is ongoing.
The ferry took to Puget Sound Friday evening for a test run.
While the Cathlamet was being repaired, ferries were shuffled around and routes throughout Washington were disrupted.
Next week, the portion of the terminal destroyed in the crash is scheduled to be replaced with a temporary fix. Another "dolphin" - a wood structure that guides boats to the dock - is expected to be installed later this summer.

...Except the Issaquah's back at Mukilteo-Columbia Beach this morning. The Cathlamet didn't make it back into service, so the Tillikum's back on the radar at Vashon.

Well, I guess that Whidbey islanders wanted more Vashon Island Beachcomber newspapers to read! ;D
Quite fun to read what's going on at another part of the Sound.

I wonder if they found a mechanical issue for the cause of the ramming last week and that prevevted her return to service.

LET'S TRY THIS ONE MORE TIME ;D CATHLAMET returns to service. Hopefully, her machinery is behaving what it should be. Any trip aboard her is still an adventure, though! No more Vashon Island Beachcomber newspapers for Whidbey islanders. ISSAQUAH's back at Vashon Island.

Maybe I missed it but has a cause of the Cathlamets' accident been determined as of yet?

Does anybody have photos (other than the news) of the damage?

You haven't heard because the verdict hasn't been released yet. WSF has photos of the damage but I don't have copies. I've seen them... not pretty.

Ahh but they did a good job of patching her. Rode her this evening during a lovely sunset. You really can't even tell there was work done, at least under the lighting I had. The temporary dolphin is interesting.
Although I doubt it is related I got a kick at some level that they seemed to back down WAY out from the dock. It was the subject of some jesting on the bow between my cohorts and I.
They also appear to have taken care of a few miscellaneous things while she was out. Noticed some paint touchup that was apparently done that I don't recall from my memorial day trip.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WSF! Well, this is not quite a bash WSF hoped for on a birthday! There was one memorable birthday bash. This was in 1980. December 29 to be exact. ISSAQUAH celebrated her first birthday by destroying Fauntleroy! Some birthday bash that was!! Exactly one year earlier on the same date, she was launched (actually lowered to the water by a big lift, a boring launch to say the least). She had just returned from maintenance. Other ferries there were the KLAHOWYA and QUINAULT. The KULSHAN had been subbing for the ISSAQUAH. The damage was enough to move the eastern gateway to Downtown Seattle. The birthday boat was serving. The KULSHAN added service (hope her coffee machine was working!). It was quite a circus on the Downtown Waterfront with all those cars crushing their way into the ferry dock area, going all directions! The new KITTITAS rejoiced and joined the bashing party by putting the Lofall-South Point run out of service by ramming a dock there, only within hours of the ISSAQUAH's hit!!! Her damage to the dock there was only enough to sideline this run for a few hours compared to days for Fauntleroy. Oh, for the life of a ferry commuter!

Ferry system fires captain blamed for Mukilteo crash
By Susan Gilmore
Seattle Times staff reporter
The captain of the ferry Cathlamet, which ran into the dock in Mukilteo on June 1, has been fired for "grossly negligent actions" by Washington State Ferries.
The ferry system said Friday that Capt. Dan Tracy, 60, a 13-year veteran with the state ferry system, exercised poor judgment while docking the 124-car ferry at Mukilteo.
Tracy is appealing his dismissal.
The accident caused $139,000 in damages to the ferry and $1 million to the Mukilteo terminal. There were two minor injuries: A galley worker was struck by a beverage cart, and a passenger suffered cuts and bruises when he fell down six stairs.
According to a report by the state ferry system, Tracy did not follow procedures in slowing the vessel as it was coming into the dock, he didn't follow procedures in operating the vessel and he failed to call the chief mate to the pilothouse because he became ill and needed an emergency break.
"The complete lack of adherence to pertinent WSF ... procedures led directly to the [crash]," the report said. Investigators said Tracy failed to sound the danger signal or give any warning before hitting the terminal.
"While terminating Capt. Tracy was a very difficult decision, our passengers rely on our crews' uncompromising commitment to their safety every day," said port Capt. Mark McElwaine, lead investigator into the accident. "Our No. 1 concern is passenger safety."
McElwaine said Tracy could have asked someone else to dock the boat, which was carrying 73 cars and 100 passengers, if he was feeling ill. McElwaine said Tracy also didn't properly engage the bow propeller, which slows the boat when landing, and didn't let the engine room know he was approaching the dock. "Even if he had followed procedures, he would have had time to abort the landing," said McElwaine.
While Tracy has worked for the ferry system for more than a decade, he'd only been captain of the Clinton-Mukilteo route since April. He is the first captain to be fired in a decade, said a ferry spokeswoman.
Tracy's attorney, Carol Hepburn, said Tracy is a member of the Masters, Mates and Pilots union, and it will file a grievance about the dismissal next week.
She said Tracy blames equipment failure on the boat for the accident and he tried to put the bow propeller in the proper position for landing, but it didn't work. "We're looking at the whole system," she said.
