KINGSTON
The ferry captain of the M/V Walla Walla was allegedly punched in the face late Monday by an 18-year-old Stanwood man police believe was on drugs, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.
Crew members, including the 52-year-old captain, were attempting to clear the boat off in Kingston to receive its new load of passengers shortly after 11 p.m. They found the 18-year-old lying between two benches, unresponsive, reports said, and when they moved the man onto one of the benches, he reportedly hit the captain on the left rear-side of his jaw.
The crew was able to subdue the man, who after struggling "seemed to pass out," before deputies arrived. Once there, he struggled briefly with deputies, but was cuffed and taken to the Kitsap County jail on suspicion of third-degree assault. Bail was set at $20,000.
The 18-year-old said he didn't remember his actions aboard the boat, reports said, but when reminded, he allegedly replied: "Cool," and "laughed under his breath."
Another ferry employee told deputies the man is a regular customer on the boat and crews suspect he uses intravenous drugs in the bathroom there, reports said.
A request was forwarded to Kitsap County Risk Management to have the man tested for diseases passed through needles.
The captain said the punch hurt, but reports didn't indicate whether he required medical attention.

I don't think he required medical attention. I was listening to the event as it was happening, getting the play-by-play on fleet radio. It's the first time in ten years I've heard of someone actually landing a punch on a WSF staffer.

Ferry Captain Punched in Face by Passenger This happened to a BC Ferry Captain too, a long time ago... There's a story about it in the Bannerman's book about a passenger who pounded the Captain in the face after his boat was capsized by a ferry heading into Horseshoe Bay. I don't have the book with me right now, so I can't recall all the details, and don't want to spread too much misinformation

What I remember is that while pulling in, the person told his girlfriend the ferry would pass right by. The ferry just kept coming and coming and he ended up jumping over. After the ferry was docked he climbed all the way up to the bridge and gave the captain a punch and the captain ended up jumping off the bridge and got some crew to subdue him. The man in the Walla Walla case is now being charged a felony www.kitsapsun.com/news/2007/aug/15/felony-charge-follows-ferry-captain-assault/
