The AMHS ferry MV Kennicott has suffered a steering problem and is out of service. The MV Kennicott is the newest mainline vessel in the AMHS fleet and is built to serve both SE Alaska and SC Alaska. She is certified for revenue voyages in the Gulf of Alaska as well as the inside passage. The vessel will go to Ketchikan for necessary repairs. The problem developed near Kodiak, Alaska. No estimate of how long it will take to complete repairs.
This is the second problem AMHS has had this month with mainline vessels. The MV Columbia was removed from service for the remaining summer season after she suffered engine/electrical problems. It is likely that MV Columbia will not return to service until May, 2008.

According to the Ketchikan Daily News, the disabled AMHS ferry MV Kennicott departed Kodiak on Friday night and will proceed very slowly to the Ketchikan Shipyards. MV Kennicott suffered a rudder/steering failure this week. It is uncertain as to how long she will be out of service.
