And as it was they had the "good" fortune to capsize on a sandbar, otherwise the casualty rate would've been even higher.

Can anyone tell me where the "herald wood" is? This is a memorial for the people who died on the ferry. I have been trying to find out where it is but there is no information on the net and I dont know where else to look. I beleive it is in Whitfield, Dover somewhere.

There was a small fleet of those ferries, Townsend Thoresen. They designed these ferries pretty badly, they look pretty top heavy. I do have to say though, they are pretty neat looking! www.faktaomfartyg.se/townsend_thoresen_co.htm
