Looks like they will be using cruise ships for shelters for people who are now homeless cause of Hurricain Katrina! First time I have heard of this happening whith cruise ships!
Cruise Ships To Provide Shelter September 3: Carnival announced today that 1991-built ECSTASY, 1993-built SENSATION and 1985-built HOLIDAY will be put into service for six months to provide relief for the thousands made homeless by Hurricane Katrina, the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. Initial plans are for ECSTASY and SENSATION (both Fantasy-class series ships with a total passenger capacity of 2,606 each ) to be docked in Galveston while the smaller HOLIDAY (with a total passenger capacity of 1,800) will remain at Mobile. Carnival shipboard employees will be staffing the three chartered ships. Additionally, the car-ferry SCOTIA PRINCE has been added to the line up.

Thats really good to see that other companies are helping out even when they have no reason to. It would be great to get one of royal caribbean's voyager class down there.

Karl - your better placed then myself - but our "understanding" here in the UK - is that the Cruise Ships have been brought in to house the support crews - like the army - engineers - telecoms - ect... We don't think it is for anyone who lived in New Orleans.
We also hear that all the "dirty" water is been pump back out into the Gulf - with all the bug and diseases that it has picked up. Surely this will harm the Gulf ?
We are getting a lot of TV news - reports - which we are been told - people in America are not getting... Bush is cutting down on the negative images coming out of there. Is this correct?

Davidov, your wrong about one thing, royal caribbean is spending all their money on two cruise lines rather than several cruise lines and it shows in the service and in their ships.
Oh and also ford is just as big as GM it owns Lincoln, mercury, mazda, volvo, jaguar, land rover and aston martin.

GM is the biggest auto manufacturer in the world. It, Chrysler and Ford are known as the "Big Three."

Karl - Last night here - London - BBC2 TV newsnight - special report on the Storm - there was one Cruise ship in some sort of Port - and it was going to be support - provide housing & food / water ect.... for the rescue workers.
A Red Cross - worker was a little pissed off - when interviewed about it.
I don't know the name of her- but did look new - and not that large either. (Mega cruise ship it wasn't)

I have no idea. I only keep track of the cruise ships around the BC coast in the summer.

I was under the impression that the ships were for ordinary civilians, but when I was talking to my dad and some family friends we found it amazing they were going to sue the ships like that, they'd be destroyed. Maybe they are in fact for gov't pers, it seems very logical.

Dane,
It appears that the PR got in front of themselves - as it sounded good - use the Cruise Ship for the people made homeless by the Storm.
The "spin" been shown over here - has it another way - that the Ships were to be used for the "support" staff - brought in - like Federal government and even Troops ect.... there was no mention of the vessels been used for anything else.
An interesting spin on this - a BBC TV reported asked this question directly in a Press interview to the Naval person in charge and he side stepped the question - like he was embarrassed to answer it.
What has also been picked up over here is the wide difference between the people who have and the ones who don't.
On the second storm - Rita - the question again came up about using Cruise ships to house key support staff - this time only one vessel was "Chartered". Again it wasn't for anyone made homeless - due to the damns breaking - but for Federal support people - from around America.
