I guess it would be an old controversy, but what good is a one mile long monorail with only two trains on it? And how, after 43 years of operating, did they manage to clip each other on a corner they must have travelled hundreds of thousands of times?

On the corner they hit the tracks narrow. It was operator error, one train should have yielded to the other. In response to your other question, the monorail is a tourist attraction. It gets people from the Seattle Center to Downtown, mainly the main shopping district. That is why it is still around. Seattle tried to extend the monorail line, but they finally gave up on it.

Voters voted it down and the 43 year old system has had problems. In 2004 there was a mechanical failure resulting in a fire and no way to get out without a 20 foot drop onto solid concrete. A break down caused one train to stop so they got one of the other trains to get passengers to the otherside. It has been a big disaster and has been a money loser where they are going to just have to surrender. Sound Transit wants to make a huge Light Rail line and I think that will be the best future for Seattle Area.
