That's (the one 2 posts above) the old PEI ferry, Abegweit. I've actually been on it... went on it in 1995. Fairly ugly on the outside, I'd agree. Nice inside though. Has/had some nice old wood panelling on the inside. She's an icebreaker... perhaps that accounts for part of her "uglyness". Don't know where she is now.. or what she's doing.

Sometimes you have to think like Fluge, to get what he's saying. A skill that I've mastered!

That boat looks like 4 different people designed 4 parts of it, then the combined the plans together and built it without further review.

That sounds pretty accurate. From an Architects point of view, there is no unity, it's the most chopped up design I've ever seen.

that pic really looks like a photo-shop job. I'm not doubting its authenticity, but it looks worse than one of Curtis's stretch-jobs.
It reminds me of the Simpsons haloween episode many years ago, when Bart had a machine to change himself into part boy / part fly. He put the dog & cat in it, and it came out with 2 rear ends for the dog/cat. That's what that pic reminds me of.
Yeah, I'm bent.....

That's another ferry from the same route as the Abegweit II. Vactionland and it's nearly-identical sister Holiday Island. I was on one of them, I forget which. The Abby one way and one of the other ones the other way. I think one of them might still run for Northumberland Ferry Line .. which is between Nova Scotia and PEI.

I found a page with the Marine Atlantic ships on it. They all look quite a bit different from the west coast ferries, mainly because of their added icebreaking requirements.

Added to the above - each country in Europe seems to think that there vessel - Ferry design is the best. You may not see it - but there really is big changes in each countries views. It is easy to see in things like clothes and music. Music in Germany - just doesn't transfer in the UK market - and then people copy French or Italian fashion design. The Italian ship yards are very known for there design - but lack in the ship building. We would never buy a vessel built in Italy - but from Norway. We would never buy clothes from Norway - as there fashion sense to use is so back wards - but we would order a ship to be built there as they know how to do it. I like the look of an Italian design boat - but if I know it was built in Italy - then it is another matter if I actually go on board. I would like to live a little bit longer. Have just read this, you can regard me as a survivor then !!! Been onboard this ship here last summer from Genova to Italy, it´s a 1994 built modern, comfortable ferry - built at Fincantieri, Palermo where the ship is registered too. Experience wasn´t bad at all and the ship can compete with the Norwegian and Finnish built ships for sure. Just what Italians do regard as customer service, well WE here call it rather "no-service". The name of this company is "Grandi Navi Veloci", they have a few, and very modern passenger ferries. The state-owned operator is called "Tirrenia" and they have similar kinds of ships which you can see below. and the interior.. The trip was a pleasure and I just couldn´t resist to show you this, before you think the Italians build i need a dictionary ferries and run a fleet of over-aged and crappy fleet that falls apart en route if you have bad luck ...

The stern-doors in the middle picture remind me of the BC Ferry Queen of Chilliwack (built in Norway).
The stern doors are what Cascade was talking about, re the standard loading system with 2 lanes at the stern, where the ramps can just drop down onto a dock.
Big ships, huh?

Yes, these ones are fairly big, around 200 m. The trip takes around 18 hours, so everyone has a cabin onboard as well.

This one isn't ugly enough?? That has probably got a bridge the size of the Spirit! Still Ugly, but would be a good boat, you can see out through the car deck! A great thing for route 1 because of the beautiful gulf islands.

Another photo of the ferry with similar design to the Queen of Prince Rupert. This is what the QPR would look like if BC Ferries got really excited about sponsorship opportunities!
