I heard on CKNW 980 AM today that the public bus system is getting rid of the double decker buses in London! Those are icons I thought would always be around.

You mean the Routemasters, right, the mayor of london thinks they are way too old. Those are Routemasters, and they are the ones going, not the new ones.

They aren't getting rid of all of them I hear. They are going to keep some for a Tourist Route the only reason they're getting rid of them is because they are not Wheelchair Accessible

My dad and I were talking about this and we both got the impression, from every media report we've seen, that *all* of London's double deckers were being retired. Whether this was for sensationalism or what, it seemed obvious to us that this wasn't the case, as London already has wheelchair accessible double deckers, and more on the way. Did anyone else feel mislead by these reports? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ QTeen wrote: "...the mayor of london thinks..." I think the correct term is "Lord Mayor", Sir. lol

They are for sale between £8,000 and £12,000 each. They did think about keeping a few running - for the Tourist Route - but that idea was canned - "as unworkable".
They new buses are OK - but I do prefer the jumping on and off the old route masters. Anyone who came from Canada - I would take on a tour of London and riding the Bus was on the list of things to do...

On the topic of double-decker buses... anyone who is familiar with Parksville might know that off the Alberni Highway is a lot full of old buses and a number of double decker buses. I always thought it would be neat to refurbish some and use them to tour around the area.

We have the Mayor of London - which is Ken Livingston, but the "Lord Mayor of London" is actually the City of London - the finance center.
Ken is elected every five years by / during a general elections. The Lord Mayor of London is appointed and it follows a well known 1,000 year history. We will know who will be the next Lord Mayor for the next 5 years.
So it was "red" Ken who stopped the Route Master Buses from working in London. He is becoming to PC correct. All these "New Labour" party people are.
In the old days they would be fire breathing left wingers - who want to strike every other day - now they are so close to the Tories - hard to tell them apart and there policy.
