No worries, John. Glad we worked all that out.
Ultra Walker, I would find Ed The Sock hard pressed to find a party nomination... unless of course he promised senate reforms and installed a giant hot tub with scantily clad, ridiculously proportioned women in the House of *no longer* Sober Second Thought.
He'd have my vote.

Canada in world terms - this is from someone living outside of Canada - needs a very big pick me up. We are though of the "poor" cousin of America, and in Europe - apart from wearing a maple leaf - it is sometimes very hard for Europeans to work out the difference, so we get lumber in with the Americans. In the last 5 to 7 years - Europe per say doesn't like the Americans - for a number of reason - but with Canada not having a strong leader with vision - we as Canadians are still put in the same pot as the Americans, So from my view point - we need to have a leader who can lead but also has vision - which is accepted worldwide - the last time that happen a certain MR. T was in power and we held are heads high. It´s true, we in Europe think somehow that Canada is the backyard of USA. This comes from, may I say it - that you simply don´t hear much about Canada, unless you have heard from someone´s holiday - experiences or someone who moved over. What puzzles us Europeans about Americans and Canadians as well - may so since I read the text above - is that you mix up religion and politics. Here, politics and religions are a thing to be kept strictly apart and religion is mostly kept very private. I do find this very good, because I do regard religion as a very private thing. Religion should help us, to have a better life, to find ways how to do it right when we are rather lost, to give us an advice. But I hate it, if people are using religion to gain power over other people, or use religion to make people voting for them. I would call this abusing religion.

It's frustrating that the only truly charismatic leader in the federal arena at this date is Gilles Duceppe. He's witty, sincere, and frighteningly intelligent. Both in this election, and in it's predecessor, I was amazed at how effectively he trounced the other leaders. It is my opinion that, were he representing a nation-wide federalist party, he'd be on top, and Canada would be looking at a majority government with him in the driver's seat. I have nothing but admiration for the man.
This being said, while I would love to return to the heady days of Pierre Elliot Trudeau, I think looking for a leader 'like' him is in error. No one will ever be able to be like him. People remember him because he was unique. At present, I see very little individuality at the microphones. Jack Layton is as stiff as a board, and simply cannot debate. I cry for the left when he starts speaking. Stephen Harper... Oh dear. Quite frankly, he would've been considered dull in 1950's suburbia. As for Martin... Well, my jury's out on him. There are aspects of him that I like. There are aspects of all the leaders that I like. But as for Martin, I really can't tell yet.
Canada has a fabulous PM in the making. His name is Rex Murphy.

I must agree with that, it just goes back a millenium from when the Spanish conquered the Aztecs and Mayans. They used religion to conquer people and that to me is wrong, it should be a persons choice to join a religous group or not be religous at all.

so it looks like the Conservatives are neck and neck with the Liberals. Stephen Harper has been coming out with a new Idea per day. He's running a good campaign so far.

Some of you may have heard of Gurmant Grewal...national news...was Conservative...made faulty tapes... Anyway if you do know this guy, he ran for our area and as you already may know, he is a total and complete moron. Fortunatley, he's not running in our area this year, so that would be good.
If I could, I would vote Conservative.
Ncamp, buddy, have a good reason for your 2 word statement please. We should have a poll on this...
...maybe.

The Green Party is relatively popular in British Columbia compared to the rest of Canada I think. As you might surmise, their platform is based heavily on preserving the environment. I think they have some good ideas, and some dumb ideas. In recent provincial elections, they've been the "third" party, and some have thought that they've cost the NDP some seats in parliament because of vote splitting - that's debateable.
I don't know much about the Green Party in Europe, but I think they are very powerful in some countries. But I don't know how similar that party is to the Canadian version.
As for the perception of religion playing a large part in Canadian politics compared to Europe, I think that is probably a misconception. The USA? Maybe. But Canada is probably less religious politically than many European nations. Think of Rome, Northern Ireland/England, Germany (I don't know how religious it is, but the Christian Democratic Union (sp?) is a major player).
As for making news in Europe... I think Canada is increasingly trying to make news in Asia, and putting more attention to those countries. At least that is the impression I get in Western Canada.
And as for Gilles Duceppe, I agree with Fenklebaum, he's probably the most impressive of all the leaders. Especially when you watch the debates.. he usually has the best lines and funniest statements out of all of them. Mind you he has nothing to lose really, especially in the English debates. Interesting now that the Conservatives are a growing threat in Quebec, Duceppe is starting to target Harper as well as Martin when it comes to all the scandal.

None of the leaders are that, but I agree.
I wish Layton was a Liberal, then I'd be happy. I will vote b/c I feel it's my duty as a citizen BUT this election hasn't inspired me at all, and I'm a very political person.
I'm voting Liberal, more as a vote against the Conservatives.

The Conservatives are now 10% in front of the Liberals...and the NDP is still stuck at 18%. About time a change came.

I knew I could relate this thread to ferries somehow. Front page of the Vancouver Metro today there was a photo of a cold Stephen Harper and his wife on the ferry between Quebec City and Levis.

The Liberal Party would have you believe that Harper was on a Navy Gunboat, that will soon be patrolling the St. Lawrence.(Incidentally: near Quebec City on the river is the site of the Empress of Ireland shipwreck. A very sad story from the early part of the 1900's.......but us history-nerds already knew that.)

As far as I'm concerned, that would be good. Canada isn't the little innocent Country anymore. Our Country is growing, and the crime rate is rising, and we all know it. Plus I think BC needs to lose that bad reputation for providing "BC Bud", sorry guys. It wouldn't be such a bad thing if Quebec seperated from Canada, that way we don't have to worry about that everlasting Debt from the Montreal Olympics, from when? The 70s? That would be a load off of our backs if we didn't have to worry about that anymore.
Conservatives, time for a change.
Too bad this election wasn't happening in the summer, or else I would be voting.

Had the NDP been higher in terms of the polls, I would probably support them more than the Conservatives...but by supporting for the NDP over the Conservatives (at 19%) is only helping the Liberals.
Politics...something I haven't really been paying much attention to lately.
