As the title says; it happened near Powell River, apparently. I guess this is really new, as it was only just mentioned on CBC TV News, and wasn't yet on their website.

Deadly plane crash on Sunshine Coast March 08, 2006 - 6:32 pm By: Nikki Pena/Claudia Kwan The weather may have had a hand in taking down a plane and killing one person on the Sunshine Coast. It's believed there were two people on board the small Orca Air plane involved in the accident. Captain Stu Robertson with Search and Rescue in Victoria says it looks like the plane ran into trouble at the airport in Powell River en route to Comox. The Transportation Safety Board has been called in and will conduct a full investigation. Crews will have to determine what went wrong. The weather was extremely windy at the time of the crash. From CKWX News Radio Vancouver. I can't find anything on the airline on line, the only thing I know that it's based out of Vancouver. That poor pilot. Cosmic Ray

Because of the crash, Pacific Coastal Airlines are averting all YVR-Powell River flights to CFB Comox. With this wind blowing through like this it unlikely that the Queen of Burnaby will sail tonight from Little River. So the people whom thought they be sending the night in Powell River after a 25 minute flight from Vancouver will be sending it in a Comox Valley hotel. Cosmic Ray

While that is very unfortunate, why didn't they just take SonicBlue? Hell they'd take you through a hurricane, no problem. Unfortunately they don't guarantee you will reach your destination, though, either.

Powell River plane crash victim ID'd Mar, 09 2006 - 1:40 PM VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) - The man killed in yesterday's plane crash at the Powell River airport was 27-year old Jason Ouellet. He was the co-pilot of the Piper Navajo that skidded off the runway during landing. The 29-year old pilot, Michael Peterson, was airlifted to Vancouver with non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the missing skipper of a fishing vessel that sank off the coast of Qualicum Beach yesterday afternoon is 50-year old David Glen Arkko of surrey. Because of it's poor location, it been said for years that Powell River Airport is just an accident waiting to happen. Hopefully after what happen yesterday they will build new larger airport about 2KM north of Black Point. Cosmic Ray.

Also heard on a news that a fishing boat was sinking off the west coast of the Island. Apparently there was only one man aboard, and he was heading to French Creek with a full load of herring.

Regarding the boat:
I mistakenly wrote that the boat sank off the west coast of the Island, it was actually the east coast. And they haven't found the guy yet, but they found debris from the boat and a life raft.

I've now heard that the pilot of the crash might have been trying to land with the wind. Not a good idea when it comes to flying in gusty winds, I can imagine.

What the late news said last night that the plane was about to land when the wind suddenly changed direction from east to west. The plane was then likely gaining speed as it reached the runway (and from what I herd) the pilot tried to power up in order turn around for another try, however for what ever reasons he couldn’t. He striked the ground half way down the 3,671 foot long runway and was just going to fast to stop before he ran out of runway. Cosmic Ray

It was a short story, late at night, after all.
