Hey PR Kid, Did you hear that the Government wants to connect us with you guys with a 215km Highway through the mountains. Most of it is already logging roads but some of it has to be made still. I have no idea if or when they want to build it or how exactly they want to. Haha looks like you won't need to take the ferry anymore after it's made, but if I were you I would anyway just for fun. Here's a route I think it might go.

Yeah I heard about that sounds intresting if it was made people would probably still use the ferry to Vancouver if you weren't going that fast like Island Highway Fast it souynds like a good idea but I think they need a better highway road between Earls Cove and Sechelt so it'll be quick getting there because all there is on that area of the Penninsula is curves, corners zig zags we call it The Curves. But if that ever happened there would be alot of blasting in the area

Well there'd still be a need for ferries on the Sunshine Coast to connect PR with the rest of the sunshine coast and it still might be faster to get to Vancouver. The highway would come in handy for PR skiers who want to get to Whistler faster.

True. Because our small ski resort burnt down a long time ago and we have to go elsewhere to Mt. Washington for example which to get there costs alot of money. Plus it would be ideal for getting to the 2010 Olympics in Whistler at the time

By the way with this highway it would be another way to get to the Island for the people in Squamish and Whistler. Aparently if you go through the logging roads you can get to Squamish

Yeah it would be quite the drive. Looking in that direction is huge mountains that are like 6000 feet tall or something. There'd be lots of ear popping.

If they build a new one, (and I get my CSIA 1) that means Strong Skier can take his mad skiing skills over to rock the Northern Sunshine Coast.

don' the squamish hate new stuff? Yeah they do. I don't know if any of you know this, but there is a huge rock that looks over downtown Squamish called the chief. It is famous for climbers. I can't remember who's idea was whether it was the government, municipal government, or a company in Whistler, but they wanted to put a Gondola to the top and a restaurant, kind of like the one that goes up Whistler Mountain. Anyways the whole town voted no, and so obviously it's not going to happen. Another thing was the city wanted to build another ice arena, but they never said why, so the town voted no. Now the city is trying that again this time saying that the Chilliwack Chiefs hockey team would play up here. But there has still been no decision. Theres many other things that the city voted no on because they like their town the way it is. But they say everyone going to Whistler will stop here and do things on their way up. So far we have nothing, so we're going to be a pit stop for all of the rich athletes going to Whistler.

Don't plan on something like that there won't be another skiing resort

Hey you never know what might happen. Maybe one day Stuart Maclaughlin (owner of Grouse and Kicking Horse) will try making something out of the old burnt down resort in PR, like he did with what is now Kicking Horse, in Golden. I wonder, there must be back country up there, with i-mazing powder, like Heli-skiing, but I'd only find out about it in the Newspaper, or if Warren Miller (80 year old geezer who still skis and makes great ski films) goes up there to film someone who is more insane than I am on 2 planks.
Now if a resort was to open up there, and you heard off in the distance "DOPESAUCE" it would be me. (I actually yelled that once when I went flying down a hill at Whislter, but at Big White, I would have yelled, "I'M SO HUNG-OVER", that is if I had possesed the energy to yell and ski and the same time on that day.)

You know it's quite typical on here if the main topic goes into another topic that has nothing to do with the main topic. Just saying

Yeah, that kind of thing is fixed through moderators.
Back on subject: Would there be a connector from the Sunshine Coast to this highway?

I'm sure one would be built eventually, but the highways would only serve a use for going between Sea to Sky country and the Sunshine Coast, I think the ferries would still be used as a link to the Lower Mainland. Taking these roads would take 4 hrs from Vancouer to Gibsons, not as nice as a faster more relaxing ferry trip.

How is the highway between Squamish and Cache Creek?
|
|
|
Post by YZFNick on Jun 23, 2005 19:05:36 GMT -8
I'm saying that because if it's a decent road then I could skip Vancouver all together when I go from Calgary to Campbell River. The traffic in Powell River is much less than Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Hwy 99 from Cache Creek to Pemberton is 2 lane, with single lane wooden bridges, and it has lots of sharp curves, even a couple of Hairpin Turns, but It's a really nice drive with very little traffic. From Pemberton onward the road is 2-3 lane, even 4 in some parts, they just widened the highway between Whistler and Squamish.

Is it paved or gravel between Cache Creek and Pemberton?
|
|

Post by Ferryman on Jun 24, 2005 7:05:35 GMT -8
It's paved, just narrow and windy. I did it once last year going to Kamloops but I prefer the Coquihalla for the speed mostly though.

Yeah, the Coquihalla is well engineered, I remember reading in the Newspaper about possibly raising the speed-limit to 120km/h

No need to call urself stupid... Go into your profile and then select custom avater pic, and type in a URL, you need to have it uploaded to the internet, by using an online photo album, Yahoo, or if you have your own website, like I do. In any case it needs to be on the internet somehow.

I am not in favor of this proposal and I believe it would be a failure for several reasons: 1. expensive running a road through the mountains there including rock blasting - the area would also be prone to avalanches, 2. the road connects to Powell River, the last town (besides Lund) on the Sunshine Coast. All the traffic to Powell River and Vancouver Island via Powell River-Comox would not meet the capacity of this highway, and 3. there is no fixed link to the Lower Sunshine Coast - perhaps a road to Port Mellon would solve that...but how? They have a ferry running to the mill on the west side of Howe Sound, meaning it is not a very easy route through there.
