It's 110 years to the month that word first reached this far south of the gold found so far north as our Yukon Territory's Klondike River near Dawson City, triggering a stampede for gold the likes of which hadn't been seen since the sart of European settlement of our province half a century earlier. This should be a significant moment in time to anyone with interest in our local nautical history as it provided much of the financial impetus to build the fleets and infrastructure that made us what we are today on the coast. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klondike_Gold_Rush

HOO-HOO... And it provided the impetous for a great many shipwrecks in BC and up through Alaska... I used to spend hours reading books on shipwrecks of BC on holidays when I was a kid... we always went on our sailboat... of course this meant fewer ferry rides for vacation, but we did get to see so much of the Coast and the Inside Passage that most people never even see. It also was the impetous for one other thing that I love to study... The White Pass and Yukon route railroad... which is today the world's most successful tourist railroad. www.wpyr.com/history/index.html
