LNG terminal plans moved to B.C.'s Texada Island

A $2-billion project to build a liquefied natural gas import terminal and gas-fired power plant in Prince Rupert is being moved.

Instead, the privately held company in charge of the project said it will build the facility on Texada Island, in the Georgia Strait.

WestPac LNG president Mark Butler said Tuesday the new project is aimed at providing a secure supply of natural gas to the province.

The company had been working for two years to locate the project in Prince Rupert, but changed its mind because of the soaring cost of materials, Butler said.

He said the company may consider the North Coast city as a satellite facility in the future.

Officials in Prince Rupert were notified about the company's change of plans in February, Butler said.

Wow, this is going to have a huge impact on Texada!

Makes me wonder if a larger ship will be needed on this run once the project gets under way.

I'm not sure how many jobs this will create.. anyone have an idea? I'd guess not too many. The biggest impact on jobs and ferry traffic would probably be in the building of the facility - which might take a while. And that would probably not only affect the Texada ferry but the other ferries serving the Sunshine Coast. This will be interesting to watch. An article in the Vancouver Sun today did point out this is still far from a sure thing.
