FlugelHorn: Your housekeeping efforts are appreciated, so please don't give up. Joking aside, the guidelines on this forum aren't really all that complicated, if people want to take some time to familiarize themselves with things.

Here's a question about one of the 7-Sis pics, that being the Sechelt Queen with the "low funnel". And this is likely also a general engineering question re ferries. ----------
- what is the purpose of today's funnel structure? Contrary to the old steamship days where the big funnel was an actual chimney of sorts, today's funnels (and that of the S-Queen) just seems to be a protective-housing for various individual pipes.
So is the big oval-shaped "Funnel" now really just for show? If you consider a ship such as Bowen/Mayne Queen, the same types of exhaust pipes are exposed, without the classic funnel-type casing.
So has the ship-funnel now evolved to only being a show item, or is there some purpose to it? ie. does the large funnel structure protect the various exhaust pipes from wind damage?
just wondering, as the funny short Sechelt-Queen funnel reminded me of this issue that I've pondered in the past.........

7sisters, thank you very much for persevering and posting those photographs. I know it can be difficult at first (I am still really new at the whole photo-posting thing too). There were some really rare ones in there. I especially liked the ones of the V and B class under construction.
In response to the whole funnel thing, I think that it is still somewhat functional, but is mostly for show. Take the spirits for example. They have more than 8 different pipes going up the stack. the 4 from the main engines are at least 10" in diameter. I think that a bundle of pipes like that would look pretty ugly uncovered. The stack also exists to direct the gases over the rest of the ship.

7 Sisters - I have had a look and I am impressed. The pictures are, in general, good, great, even excellent.
Seeing as we are talking photos here I'd suggest that this thread be closed and we resume discussion on your photos in the Historical Photos thread. If you have photos from the old CP Steamship, Union, etc days post in the section called West Coast Steamships. If you have any new photos* post them in the photos section using the existing 'New Photos' thread.
* New could be considered as anything taken in recent years - what we might call the digital age.
Thanks, JST aka WCK

Using my "almighty moderator powers" (that phrase is trademarked by Hardy), I've inserted 7-Sisters' photo-account address into his profile signature.
We did it under a local anesthetic, and a priest was present. ;D
