Grrrr Dave you had to post that tracking site! www.siitech.net/Another place to distract me from other things I should be doing ;D. Been following a military exercise into Bedwell Harbour. I presume since the ships are 33m it is Orca Class.

I presume since the ships are 33m it is Orca Class. Oh, someone must have beat me to it. As of this moment our venerable lady the Queen of Tsawwassen is about to transit Active Pass northbound while the Queen of Nanaimo sits idle at Tsawwassen Terminal. How do I know? This information is thanks to a wonderful new resource that I've found with rare actual *live* AIS ship positions. Let's keep this between us ( ) but you can find this great site with Vancouver area specific details here: www.siitech.net/vtslite/Main.aspx (just search appropriately ) Though I was sure that such a great resource was already known by many. I've been looking for a good live AIS tracking site ever since www.aislive.com started charging for live views over a year ago and had given up a long while ago until looking for a way of watching the Queen of Tsawwassen leave route 9 last night.

Oh maybe I am unfairly blaming Dave and you Retro are at fault . Well after I have stayed up too late tonight watching some very important ship movement I will be glad to blame whoever (except for me of course when I could have logged off the laptop ;D )!

She's still in transit. You can track the Seaspan Cutlass here: www.siitech.net/VTSLite/Main.aspxMove around and zoom in until it enables the option to show names. As of this posting, they're just passing Tsawwassen, doing a speedy 3.2 knots. They list their ETA as 0630 Dec 7. It seems that I was inadvertently not the first to first discover this great resource and with coincidentally unknowing close timing.

Due west of Cape Flattery now, and she has entered the Strait of Juan de Fuca vessel traffic matrix. Though she hasn't shown up on the Sii Tech site yet, unless she's

No, Retro, that's not her. The 636 in that MMSI indicates registration in Liberia. We're looking for an MMSI starting with 37.

The MMSI is like a telephone number, and it is used in a system called "Digital Selective Calling". MMSIs are always nine digits, and the first three non-zero digits represent country of registry.

Oh thanks, my bad, I was getting IMO (International Maritime Organization) mixed up from my days working for an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) certified company a few years back; you can see how close they are.

M is far away from S on the keyboard. Like most I don't look at my fingers when I type, and like most the letters 'M' and 'S' are pretty close together in my brain.

Whoever it was who put Sii Tech on to this site, a big thanks. It's great and it's another distraction to keep me from renovating the house.
About a year ago I found another one of these tracking sites that I have not seen mentioned here.
sailwx.info
There is no www in the URL.
The CR was not shown on this one as she crossed the Atlantic and came up the Pacific coast of NA. However when she came starboard abeam Cape Flattery she was showing on the site. I suspect that port areas with computer based traffic control systems feed into sailwx. In the open ocean it seems to be different. As well, I have noticed that the location info can be a day old. All in all not as good as Sii Tech but worth keeping bookmarked.

Yes I know Cobblehill I am having similar distraction issues here. But for me the last week it has been about not sleeping rather than not getting other stuff done. I wish US Navy ships were listed though. Sometimes they seem to pop up but then disappear. Similar for the Canadian ones as well. HMCS Ottawa docked in Esquimault was showing up now and then while we were all glued to the CR. Understandable though why those ships are not listed. Although a US supply vessel left from somewhere near Seattle (maybe Bremerton or Bangor) and went to the weapons range in Nanoose Bay.
BTW I know Cobble Hill well. I have an Uncle and Aunt in Cowichan Bay and my grandmother used to live in Duncan. Toured the winery near there my last visit. And the well known one that starts with Sch something. They make the most amazing Balsamic Vinegar.
Welcome to the Forum.

Hello everyone! I’ve been playing with this site and have done a few cool things with it I thought I might share. First, I just love this site! I’m not sure where they pick the AIS data up from, but our neck of the woods has coverage from Seattle to past Campbell River. (With a few small dead zones). I recommend to anyone that you sign up for a free VTS professional account as it allows more control and customization of the interface. Once you get in the site is fairly straightforward to figure out. You can choose from several map backgrounds as well as switch to a satellite image overlay. (Click google map in the toolbar, then Hyb. in the map window) This is all nice, but it’s the filters I like to play with. With no filters on you get a widow with a few hundred ships on it! But, if you want to see individual ships only, or say a type of ship, like passenger ships only, this is where filters come in. I wanted to track passenger ships only, so this is what I did: On the menu, click “Filters”, and then click “Groups”. Make a new group called “Passenger Ships”, under the ship type menu, select Passenger Ships, and click OK. Now under the filters menu again, in the select filter drop down menu, select “Passenger Ships”. In the first filter line the group should be, you guessed it, “Passenger Ships”. Then select a color from the last drop down menu and click OK. Back at the map window, just select the Passenger Ships filter in the drop down menu and away you go! You should now have a window that looks something like this: Once you get the hang of it you can sit back and watch some pretty cool stuff in real time. ;D Tug boats moving a ship out

Thanks Kam... I've been having fun with that site too...
It's really great that it's free for us. The only problem I've been having is trying to track the CI in Flensburg. She just doesn't show up. I know Markus was able to find her at one point doing her sea trials, but I've never seen a trace of her.
