ok this thread has been reborn. Now please stick to the topic. Anything else you want to discuss go to another topic. The December Flagship will be a Christmas/Holiday Season theme. Photos that have snow in them, on the lower hills, not including mountains that always have snow on them or Christmas decorations such as lights on the funnel or Christmas Trees on the masts, ect.. It is not specific to any ship just try to make it Christmas looking. Also for December if you want to post an interior shot of Ferries decorated for Christmas please feel free to as I am not going to limit it to just a photo of a ship but interior shots with decorations might be a neat idea too. It is anything Christmas. Edited photos with a Christmas message would be a neat idea too. Being December I think it would be good to go with a Christmas theme and not specific to any ship. Forum Guideline apply ferriesbc.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=flagship&action=display&thread=1180753384Nominations will be closed Nov 29th at 9:00pm PST Also members that have posted a photo already in the old thread will have to post them again on this one as the old thread is gone.

Here's my first, Queen of Cowichan arriving at Departure Bay the same day that the Quinsam and the Gabriola Island ferry route (#19) was out of service during the investigation of that truck that fell into the drink when the vessel pulled away unexpectedly. We also had a generous snowfall the night before a spectacularly sunny day...

Thats one incredible shot. So Far it has my Vote. Yeah, it is a cool picture... except for one thing... there's seagulls in it ... I've just spent so much time near the ocean (or sweeping parking lots), that I absolutely hate seagulls... lol... they are so selfish and gluttonous that it just annoys me to no end. But I like the picture... at least they do look sort of graceful at that angle in flight. You managed to get a good shot that makes even seagulls look nice.

But I like the picture... at least they do look sort of graceful at that angle in flight. You managed to get a good shot that makes even seagulls look nice. It's interesting how attitudes have changed in this way, and I've always wondered what made seagulls acceptable to the point of the "Follow the birds..." - referring primarily to the seagulls used in graphics - being used even as a slogan to attract tourists to Victoria and Vancouver Island, from near as I can tell, as early as the 1950s or maybe even 1940s (1951 brochure for Victoria for sale on Ebay: www.tinyurl.com/2xedj9) as I partly share your thinking on them, though my view of them is more of (* no connection to any other discussion intended*) tolerance as they're only around in the first place, let alone so 'grabby', because of our being here and fueled mainly by our waste. I'm reminded, though, of the Pixar animated film "Finding Nemo", as I'm sure others are, and those aptly portrayed seagulls that squawk, "Mine, Mine, Mine, Mine, Mine.." in droves But I can still, however, find a certain grace in their ways, especially as a photographer, and can partly understand where those tourism officials were coming from way back in the day. In fact even the limited edition BC Ferries 'soundtrack' vinyl single was named "Follow the Birds" www.tinyurl.com/yvjaza...So my motivation for the line in the banner and the choice of this lucky shot of mine (and no, unlike what even I might think if I didn't know better, neither those birds nor anything other than the letters were added to the image) was in a way to pay homage to this unusual and intriguing angle on attracting tourists, hopefully even remembered by some of the older (older than my generation, not old in general, as I learned to qualify out of respect for my folks while growing up ) gents (and ladies ) who follow this forum.

Thats one incredible shot. So Far it has my Vote. .....you said this after only 1 picture was posted. Thanks for the laugh ! ;D ------------ And Retro, I totally missed understanding the "follow the birds" script....so I'm glad that you explained it. Great idea, very subtle, and a good homage to history.

The 'follow the birds' theme was alive and well in the early 60's when this decal was current: www.bcferries.com/about/history/arch_bcf_sticker1.htmlSeagulls also graced coach lines buses on board the ferries, as in this photo Graham posted back in June on the historical BC Ferries photos thread: BTW, Graham's photo above of the Cowichan entering Departure Bay is superb and worthy of being at the mast head in December.

Only one week left to add your photo for the vote...
Or, are we all in favor of having Graham's picture of the Cowichan approaching Departure Bay as the header..?

.....it is looking like an acclamation this month, for Graham's pic.
Are any of the other usual-suspects going to submit pictures?
I think that "Wet Coast Kid" will likely make the decision on this one. He either has 2 or 3 pictures yet to submit, or he might just concede. Since he is the other regular main player in these contests, let's wait to hear what he says.
As for Graham's bird pic, I think it's excellent and would make a great flagship banner for December. .....but Jim might still have something up his sleeve (or in a box in his garage... ;D)

The trouble is (or atleast this is why I haven't posted anything) -- I don't think many of us have pictures that have a "holiday" theme... It is a great choice of theme, no question about it... but I think I speak for the collective when I say: pictures of ferries with snow in them are sort of hard to come by, just because the time span of snow on the South Coast is so small... ....unless you live in Burnaby or North Vancouver, in which case that's a whole other can-o-worms. ================ I'm sure someone else on this board can explain it much better than I can

I'm Just Going to Say Unless We Have a Photo Pop Up in a Few Days, Graham's is the Default Winner.

I'm also all for Graham's picture. I'll likely vote for it, too. But didn't (was it EvergreenFleet or someone else?) have a couple of entries posted in the thread that was deleted after it was hijacked in a discussion of Christmas as a social ill or something?
Just wanted to make sure something didn't get lost in the shuffle.

Here's my 1'st 2 entries... #1: This was from last year when the crew of the M/V Klahowya decided to put gift wrapping on the pictures and stanchions in the interior. #2: This was from the snowstorm in January and was taken on the M/V Tillikum

Umm.... Before I go to all the work of making a header... Query: If I did make this picture into a header, would it count? Or would I be disqualified? It has snow.... on the mountain... I think that counts, but just checking...

re Michael's question re Mt. Baker snow:
I think the intent was "low lying snow", which would indicate a winter month.
I believe that Mt. Baker has snow year-round.
So in my opinion, that particular photograph wouldn't qualify.
(also the fact the a Spirit-vessel would offend the non-spiritual people among us... I say that in fun ;D)

OK, thanks, just thought I'd check, because now that I review the dates, that particular photo was taken in late July.

It's Snowing Here as We Speak. Why is it that the snow comes on the Weekdays and not on Weekends when I Could Get out to a Ferry Terminal.

People get out to Horseshoe Bay. By looking at the webcams at HSB tonight it looks all snow covered up there now!
