While traveling on the Coastal Renaissance on July 8th, I noticed something very peculiar: at the end of the voyage, the normal announcement for all bus passengers to return to the vehicle decks occurred, but it was immediately followed by what seemed to be elevator music! This new 'theme song' droned on for about two minutes, then the announcement for the rest of the vehicle passengers to return to the vehicle decks occurred. I have never heard this 'theme song' before on the ferries. Does anyone know what this is, or why it happens?

This is added to seperate the "We are nearing..." part of the docking announcment with the "It is now time for all vehicle passengers to return to the vehicle decks". Currently, this is only done on the Coastal Renaissance and Celebration as they are the only two to have video syncronized announcements.
If you watch the video screens it plays a short little video of employees, passengers and ships during this musical interlude.
As for the music itself, it has been used by BC Ferries on some of their videos that were available on the BCF website in the past. There is two different pieces used, as well.

oh. I think they should only play it near the video screens then, because noone will know what it is really for unless they can see the screen

Love the "bing-blong" tone to start announcements, just like on the Cumberland! Yes, it's on the spooks for messages, but that one's annoying. So they added some music in between the two announcements to match the video playback. The one thing that I'm sure they all have in common (for ones that have the 2 separate announcements) is that they only press the play button once to play both! Just some added flare by adding music. "I don't think you have enough flare on your uniform. 15 pieces of flare is short of the minimum requirement of 16." ;D (great flick!)

Ugh.
*shivers up and down spine*
As a regular commuter on the Coastal Renaissance, I've heard that "Music" way too many times. They make it sound like a victory song at the end of a Western themed movie. I like to joke and say, "Yes! We actually made it to the other end". However, I guess I don't mind it so much when I hear it as we're arriving at Nanaimo, because that means I'm finally home after a long week stuck at work.

It reminds me of Disneyland... and I find it equally as annoying as any of you. Although, they seem to hesitate playing it as often on the Coastal Inspiration, but hey, I'm down with that! The only time I've really heard it is on the Celebration and Renaissance, the two Coastals I rarely travel on these days... (or at least try to avoid.) The video that is synced with the music seems to be filmed by a VHS camcorder, and lacking in thought and quality. If you haven't seen it yet.... it's not a life-changing experience

Yes, I agree with you on the video itself. It seems very amateurish. I believe it was Dane who said it was a sad attempt at trying to recreate something similar to airline safety videos - he is right...

Here's the Coastal Renaissance's announcements that are played upon arrival at the Ferry terminal. I find the music incredibly annoying. But I suppose it's a little more tolerable when you watch it while it's sync'd with the video playing on the TV's. PS: The link only seems to work when you use the link in Firefox. www.queenofchilliwack.ca/ferry_sounds/Coastal%20Renaissance%20Announcements.mp3

Sounds like music used in the 80's for Earth Star Voyager....
