Leaving Prince Rupert I spotted the blue Digby Island ferry that runs to Prince Rupert's airport. The previous day, there was a cruise ship in Prince Rupert so the town was quite full of tourists.. especially in the Cow Bay area. I saw more bald eagles in Prince Rupert than seagulls!:

The airport ferry doesn't actually have a name. It just says 'Prince Rupert, BC' on the side in little blue letters I looked it up in the Transport Canada ship registry, and it's name is actually Digby Island Ferry. Formerly Prince Rupert Airport Ferry. Very imaginative.

Today during my trip aboard the Coast Guard vessel I volunteer my time aboard, I got to follow right along side the Digby Island Ferry as she cruised down Newcastle Channel in Nanaimo. She's now at Nanaimo Shipyards for refit.

Photos from Nanaimo shipyard, on April 12, 2010 The blocks on the ways are ready. Too bad I didn't get to see her being pulled out of the water. Full ship view from different angles Close-up on the name: Port of registry marking, and her rescue-boat

Thanks for taking those photos. So what is subbing in for the Digby ferry while getting refit work done? Tug and Barge?

I was on the City of Prince Rupert website, and also the YPR site trying to answer that same question (what is subbing for the Digby Island Ferry?). There is nothing posted at all, so no luck in answering that question. They may have the Nicola doing double duty in the interim (both airport & Port Simpson), though I am uncertain if she can use both docks on the Digby Island run.
I will be in Rupert in a few weeks and may be able to find out for sure at that time.

Have been "whale watching" on this ferry when planes were late/delayed. Good to see it is refit time!

I can confirm that the Nicola is/was subbing for the Rupert Airport ferry. Here are a few photos taken (from the NorEx) in Rupert Harbour exactly 14 days ago. At dock on Rupert side The buses on board are 'acting' as 'airporters'. In the background you can see the Fairview container terminal. Underway for Digby... Wow! That is quite a unique happening. Time to move to Prince Rupert because it looks like you get all the best moments to photograph up there.

Ooh, she's been painted! I gotta convince my mom to go on a road trip to Rupert this summer again, or at least send me off alone (we've got relatives there). It's a great place.

Good photos, I have walked past almost every day and watched the re-fit and thought I might post some new photos. Yours are very good, so no need. The tarp must have just come off the side today ?. I was born in Birmingham only a few paces from Digby Park so the name bought back memories. I had to Google Digby Island though. I must visit it some day.

Thanks. Saturday May 22nd (when I took the pictures) was the first time that I'd driven-by in a few weeks, so it very well could be a fresh unveiling. I wonder which small ship will be next up on the ways at this shipyard.
