Neil,
Prince Rupert has a fancy cruise ship terminal which sees occasional use. I have told many people what is needed if they want to see Rupert as busy with cruise ships as in nearby Ketchikan. The solution is simply to cease being Prince Rupert, BC and become Prince Rupert, Alaska. The same advice would likely work for Nanaimo and Campbell River.

They get at least a ship a week during the summer, according to my mom's friend's statement last summer.

I think that's about the size of it, and small BC cities are dreaming- and dreaming rather expensively- if they think differently. Prince Rupert has a grand total of 25 cruise ship visits this year, each for about six hours, where most passengers don't get off. They had about 65 two years ago. This is not a growth industry.

Prince Rupert & Victoria are the major Ports of call for Seattle based ships- this a legal requirement these ships must make enroute stop on their round trips between Seattle & Alaska.- very few Seattle based ships actually use the Inside Passage.
why does AIS sometimes not pick up ships that are in Range.

Photos of the cruise-ship facilities at Prince Rupert, on July 6, 2010: Pano-stitch showing the cruiseship dock nicely placed between a fish plant and Cow Bay. The Prince Rupert Cruise Terminal building. Part of the street infrastructure done for the cruise ship visits. - the bus lanes have nice shelters used a relatively few times each year. Thanks to the Lions Club for helping construct them. .....and the street infrastructure can't really be used by anyone else. ========== And a couple of photos of the other Prince Rupert cruiseship dock (yes, they have 2), at the Atlin building. Waterfront views, along the waterside of the Atlin building at Cow Bay.

Both those photos are of the same cruise-ship dock, from different angles. They do not have two cruise ship terminals. If there were two cruise ships moored there, passengers would only be able to embark and disembark from one of them, and they'd both have to be pretty small ships.

I think Flugel was referring to "2" as being two berths within one linear structure. Similar to Canada Place West which has two berths, within one linear side of Canada Place. I recall seeing maps with 2 terminals listed. Or maybe I'm foggy. Or maybe it was referring to 2 terminal buildings, one besie the fish-plant, and the Atlin terminal building.

I think Flugel was referring to "2" as being two berths within one linear structure. Similar to Canada Place West which has two berths, within one linear side of Canada Place. There's still only room and infrastructure one berth, even along one linear structure. Two ships back to back would never fit along that dock unless they were as short as Kwuna. I'll try and dig up a photo or two of the Norwegian Star in the berth, so you have an idea of the scale of a large ship in the terminal. Or maybe it was referring to 2 terminal buildings, one besie the fish-plant, and the Atlin terminal building. The "Terminal" in 'Atlin Terminal' refers to the building's original purpose as a freight terminal. I believe it was fish, if my memory hasn't ceased on me. There's no room for a ship to dock at both A-Term and the PRCT at the same time, in fact there's no room for a ship any bigger than two Lady Roses to fit in the Atlin dock at one time. I just asked my mother, a longterm ex-resident of Rupert, and she confirmed this.

I found my source for my notion that Prince Rupert has 2 cruise ship docks.
- the 2010 tourist map (tear-off page available at Tourist info centres and on the NorEx) shows 2 "cruise terminals": Northland and Atlin, with a long black bar beside each, which I assumed represented a dock for each.

The Prince Rupert port authority website explains the terminals pretty well. PR has two cruise terminals: Northland and Atlin. Northland is for actual cruise ships while Atlin is for oversized boats up to 7,500grt. Both terminals have separate docks and independent CBSA Tourist Tasering facilities. www.rupertport.com/northland.htmwww.rupertport.com/atlin.htm

according to Siitech The Radiance of the Seas has been more or less stationary between Vancouver Island & the West tip of Savory Island doing Pirouettes for the last 1\2 hour. I wonder what her problem is?

Maybe she is ahead of schedule, and would arrive in Vancouver too early if she kept on going? The Rhapsody of the Seas is doing the exact same thing in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The cruise ships are basically just waiting until it's appropriate to sail into their respective ports at the correct time.

If she were ahead of schedule she could slow down , continue towards Vancouver and go up Howe Sound to take some extra time.

Well, the Radiance of the Seas is following the MV Columbia heading on the right direction bound of Vancouver, at a speed of 9 knots, according to Siitech. Also, the Rhapsody of the seas is heading east bound for Seattle on the right course.

Rhapsody of the Seas was leaving Ogden Point around 6pm this evening and she usually is scheduled in Seattle Friday morning! So she does that every Thursday!
