There has been a lot of talk about vessel deployment on the Horseshoe Bay routes. They were talking about the Alberni going to Langdale during the Surrey's refit but now the Cowichan is returning to the Landale route during the Surrey's refit and the Alberni on the Departure bay route with the Coq. The Esquimalt is supposed to take the place of the Alberni at Duke Point. There has also been talk of the Queen of Oak Bay going to Langdale permanantly after her major upgrade and the Surrey being the number 2 vessel at Departure Bay, starting in the summer of 2005.

Apparently after the "C" Class vessels are refurbished it should resemble:
Langdale-Horseshoe Bay: Queen of Oak Bay Relief: Queen of Esquimalt
Horseshoe Bay-Departure Bay: Queen of Coquitlam
Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay: Queen of Cowichan Relief: Queen of Surrey
But here is a question: why move the Surrey to Vancouver Island if Surrey is on the mainland and why move the Oak Bay to the mainland if Oak Bay is on the Island? Beats me.

It's probably not a big deal if the Surrey is at Departure Bay, and the Oak Bay is at Langdale. They have had the Queen of Vancouver as the relief vessel out of Swartz Bay while the Saanich was in refit. The Burnaby is based at Little River on the island, and Burnaby is the mainland. It's going to be good to have the Surrey out of Departure Bay as I will be able to go on her more being on the island side as I have only been on her once, years ago.

Maybe it's cause the surrey needs to strech herself out cause she runs that little route all the time, cruise ship companies move there ships around so that they degrade at the same rate and not have two sisters with one of them to shreds.

I've been on the Surrey more than any other vessel being on her four-six times. I wasn't a big ferry traveller until the most recent three years though.

Short of the 'Surrey Girl's' share of problems that she's had (engine room fires, various other breakdowns...etc), I really believe that she's in probably one of the best aesthetic conditions of the ferrys that are out there. Now, that might only be because she's 20 years old, or that might be because she's been on my run for so long (Horseshoe Bay <> Langdale), but either way...if she leaves us, we'll probably miss her and al lthe jokes that we like to make about 'er.

The name, "Queen of Surrey" is cursed, even when the Queen of the North was the Queen of Surrey in the 70s and 80s, it had all sorts of mechanical problems, but they stopped as soon as the Current Queen of Surrey was built, and has been cursed ever since.
