HAPPY CANADA DAY FROM ALL ON THE STARS AND STRIPES SIDE OF THE BORDER! It was a joyous night to be in Vancouver after Team Canada won the Gold Medal in Olympic Hockey. Vancouver's citizens, along with a handful of other Canadians, know how to celebrate. A night to remember, forever! This day is yours, Canadians. Enjoy!

Happy 'HST Day' to all my fellow British Columbians.
And thank you Gord for the early Christmas present.
In spite of all of this I wish one & all a Happy 'Dominion Day' (as July 1st was once known). And to our American friends to the north & south a Happy Independence Day, July 4th.

Happy Canada Day! Now let's go and fill the government's coffers with the HST!

Our Canada Day present here was that gas jumped $0.08 per litre overnight for the HST and a minor jump in gas prices. Of course if you use an premium (91) or ultra (94) gas the prices jumped even more with premium selling at $0.10 a litre or more, higher. The line-ups at gas stations were bad and many actually ran out.
Toronto was recently given the authority to add taxes itself so I think a gas tax to fund transit will not be far away.
It is interesting to see the comparisons between BC and Ontario taxes. Like the GST I think out here the taxes will just fade away into the background and people won't even notice it after a while. Of course Quebec has had a blended tax for quite a while, and the maritimes have had HST as well. There used to be tax savings for clients to bill from a Toronto office for some items and a Quebec office for another. Quebec's provincial tax is calculated from the subtotal that includes GST so has usually been higher.
One major error with the tax is that there is now a provincial sales tax portion on postage. With the magazine industry in general in trouble with more people reading online, this will I think further reduce readership and cause job loss in that sector.
The biggest problem with the tax on postage is that there is no rebate or exemption for charities. The bulk of charities still raise the lions share of their donations from mail. You may hate it, but it works and alternatives don't work as well yet, so the result will be fewer dollars available to charities to do their vital work. Charities have already been battered by the economy so aren't in great shape to weather another drop without further reductions in services and research. Charities not only are responsible for a lot of good works, but are a major employer in Canada.
The vast majority of mail for national organizations comes out of Ontario so the impact will be felt all over Canada. The alternative of trucking mail across the border to another province will save HST but add transportation costs. There is some intense lobbying taking place. If you can be extra generous during this time, and if you can let your opinion on HST exemption made known. US charities get a special postage rate that Canadian charities don't get from Canada Post. Hopefully someone in government will see some sense and take action either with giving a special charitable rate or a rebate.

You guys were paying less than 10 cents extra for premium before HST?? My car uses premium, and have had it for nearly 4 years now. I've watched the price of premium start at 10 cents/litre more than regular back in 2006, to be about 13 or 14 cents/litre more than regular pre HST. I fill up with gas in Duncan on Wednesday night before HST set in, and I'm scared to look at the difference now. So far gas prices on Salt Spring haven't been all that bad....$1.11/litre for regular so far, two cents more than before so far. Gas prices were actually about $1.30/litre for regular up until about last week when a new gas station opened up on the Island, which opened up with $1.09/litre for regular. This caused the other gas stations to follow suit.

All it takes is a little friendly competition to bring the price down! What company opened up a new station and where is it located?

Bite into a Timmie's Canadian Maple donut and take a sip of a Timmie's double double. I did. You're making us Yankees hungry! I guess the next best thing we can get here are Krispy Kreme doughnuts. ;D krispykreme.com/home

Happy Belated Canada Day! I celebrated it at at summer camp, and from it's location in Nanoose Bay we can see the Navy's Weapon testing facility. At twelve noon, we (me and 42 others) heard a bang from down the bay, and we all got up from lunch to see what had happened. They had launched some kind of gun or missile or something. What a sight to behold, eh? We didn't actually SEE it, but there was a whole bunch of smoke coming out of part of the base for about a minute after.

This caused the other gas stations to follow suit. The 10 cent/litre was simply the amount it jumped Canada Day. The differential between regular and premium can be 12 to 14 cents for premium, more for ultra. Regular now is $1.044 on average and is pretty consistant for a change. Within a few days the price will begin to vary due to local gas wars. There are locations that specialize or target taxi customers and they tend to be the cheapest in the city.
