The Flagship Theme for August is The Little Ferry That Could, a celebration of minor car ferries and operators. Here is what that means:
1. We are looking for ferries from smaller ferry operators such as city, county, or ministry of highways ferries, so that means NO submissions from BCF, WSF, AMHS, and Steamship Authority.
2. The ferry must be of a smaller size, basically no larger than Osprey 2000, as a general frame of reference.
3. The vessel must carry cars in a typical RO-RO fashion, so that means passenger-only vessels and ferries like Frances Barkley do not qualify.
4. The vessel must be in operation today, so that leaves out the Albion Ferries (sorry).
OK, that's quite a laundry list of rules and restrictions, but it still leaves a large number of eligible ships. Here are some that come to mind when thinking of potential candidates: - Digby Island Ferry - Nicola (yes, she used to work for BC Ferries, but does not anymore, which makes her eligible) - any of the interior Ministry of Highways ferries such as Osprey 2000, Balfour, Galena, and Shelter Bay, etc. There's a quite a few to choose from that lot. - Barnston Island ferry - Whatcom Chief - Guemes - either of the Pierce County Ferries, Steilacoom II or Christine Anderson (yes, we know Steilacoom II is working for WSF right now, but she still belongs to Pierce County so that makes her eligible) - Charlie Wells (Herron Island ferry) - Wahkiakum - Martha S. (Keller ferry)
And, for those of you on the east coast, you probably have a few ferries that would work, such as the Toronto Island ferry, or the Quebec City ferries. There are others out there that probably qualify, but you get the idea. So, good luck to everyone, and have fun!

What about Columbian Princess? I have a few shots of her. Being as how most people don't seem to know about her, I thought I'd Check.

Where does she sail, what are her specs, is there a web site? As long as this vessel meets the criteria outlined above, you should be fine submitting it.

If I get up to Dawson City before the end of the month, I'll try and snap a few pictures of the George Black.

I would think that the Columbian Princess should be fully eligible, as should any of the various river crossings in Alberta, Sask, and the Yukon.

Here's a little ferry that could, and did, but doesn't anymore... A ride aboard the Boston Bar ferry in 1985. Second picture shows "Suzie" my trusty Suzuki GS860G.

Does it have to be your own photo? Or can you get it from family and/or friends?

Family and friends photos are fine, as long as you have the right or permission to post it (just in case there are any copyright issues).

Whatcom Chief taken in August, 2008. If this is a submission, it needs to follow the Forum's rules/guidelines for presenting a Flagship nomination. See this thread for clarity: ferriesbc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=flagship&action=display&thread=3510What we like to see is an image posted directly to the thread, 800x200 pixels in size, followed with a link to the actual image that will be used as the header, 960x240 pixels. Take a look at the ones that have been submitted thus far. That's the format we are looking for. It would also be useful, particularly with this month's theme, to add a little text to your photo calling out the name of the ferry, so we know what it is. Thanks.

My submissions, from my recent road trip. ... Beautiful composition here, methinks. I recently did a northern trip, and took many pictures of the Digby Island Ferry at Prince Rupert, and the 2 ferries at Francois Lake, with the banner-contest in mind. I chose and cropped 10 images. Then I chose 3. - my main criteria for rejecting was lighting. For many of my shots, I was facing the sun; in the right place at the wrong time of day. But for some shots, the sun was a perfect back-light for my subject. - for the rejects, I've posted some of them in the regular picture threads. Here are my 3 nominations: ========== Digby Island Ferry arriving at Prince Rupert full size here: lh3.ggpht.com/_ebR5Vq-1mKg/TEYmgaRfehI/AAAAAAAACy0/7o_RL16NuFE/IMG_4304.JPGThat brilliant blue paint is going to blind me. I like this shot, particularly for its framing.

It's funny just how many ferries that I have pictures of pieces of (one end or the other, behind the dock, interior or deck pictures) but don't have a picture of the whole boat. Anyway, here are a couple for this month: Full size HERE. Full size HERE. Full size HERE.
