Some photos taken of the Seabus yesterday from Crab Park, east of Waterfront Station. Compare these two photos. They were taken at the same zoom level, from approximately the same spot, at the same angle to the ship. Is it just me, or is the new SeaBus smaller than the old SeaBus? Does that mean she also has a smaller passenger capacity? I DO know that on the new SeaBus, the interior space goes right up to the ends of the ship, while on the old one, there's about 7 feet of outside deck between the window and the end.... voice your opinions please. No need to rely on opinions... you can always check things like that out with Transport Canada. wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/4/vrqs-srib/m.aspx?lang=eUnless your perception is unusually keen, I don't think the difference would be apparent. The new Seabus is exactly 78 centimetres shorter.

I rode both of the Seabuses about a week or so ago and I do like the new Seabus alot more she has more comfortable seats. One thing I wish about the Seabus is it would be nice if they had a little outdoor area. That would be cool!

I like their use of the term 'Olympic Effect' to describe the upsurge of transit use before, during, and after the Olympics. ;D (see pg. 21 of document) What page exactly is the SeaBus info on?

I always remember clamboring on to the seabus as a boy, straight to the backwards facing seats in the front. I remember the orange... kinda a terrible colour at best. My favorite memories of Vancouver in the 70's and the 80's were from that front seat...

The Seabus had a hard landing on Thursday morning. Hasn't been a lot about it in the news, just a few little articles in the paper. The BURRARD BEAVER lost power or steering approaching the Waterfront dock and slammed into it. No injuries, but it took about an hour for a tug to push her into the berth. A rare event for a Seabus to be involved in. They're noted for their reliability. Here's the story in the Province: www.theprovince.com/SeaBus+slams+into+Waterfront+dock/5142871/story.html

Is this the first major incident for the Seabus?

Is this the first major incident for the Seabus? No. In 1993, the Burrard Beaver hit Canada Place, injuring six people. www.tsb.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/marine/precedentes-earlier/m93w0001/m93w0001.aspThe TSB blamed human error for the 1993 incident. As far as Thursday's allision, I'm scratching my head about potential causes. The Seabuses have quad RAD propulsion systems powered by independent engines. All four RADs would need to be disabled for a Seabus to lose propulsion or steering. There's not a lot of ways for all four engines to fail simultaneously outside of contaminated fuel, damage to the control cabling from the wheelhouse, or all four props getting fouled by a rope (or net) at once. I'll be interested to see what (if anything) Translink and/or the TSB has to say.

I was aboard one of the two older SeaBuses during February 2010 when it missed the dock by two meters or so during the Gold Medal Hockey Game. Apparently the crew were watching the game on the TV in the wheelhouse and weren't paying attention to the dock. They took that ship out of service for an hour or so to check damages. No major injuries that I could see, apart from some minor whiplash and one person who fell off their seat. So there's a minor incident for the books.

Hands down my favourite part of the contract (emphasis is mine):
"Upon completion of Builder's Sea Trials the Vessel shall be delivered afloat and in upright condition at the Owner's North Vancouver facility, ready for service in every respect, with all spares in place and properly secured, fuel tanks full, fresh water tanks full, and lube oil tank full and all system charged and in operating order in accordance with the Contract Documents."

Can someone with access to some sort of vessel tracker figure out where the Burrard Beaver is? Cannot find it at Lonsdale Quay right now, it isn't at Waterfront either; thus, I am confused.

That's what I am wondering. It is pretty rare for a SeaBus to leave Lonsdale Quay. Although they must have to come out of the water occasionally.

Are you aware of the maintenance facility directly adjacent to the Lonsdale Terminal, just a few meters West on the North Shore waterfront? That's where the 'off boat' is usually moored.

Yes. I lived on the North Shore for the first 22 years of life, and was a SeaBus commuter for four of those Typically all work is done at Lonsdale Quay, or with a quick trip over to Washington Marine. No sign of a Beaver there, either. But it can be hard to tell exactly what's there.

I was down at Lonsdale Quay a couple weeks ago waiting to pick someone up off the Seabus. Since I was there early, I was parked adjacent to the 'Seabus Sleeping Quarters' and noticed there were no boats there. This was a Friday morning with 2 boats in service. I was wondering the same thing about where the 3rd boat was. It did, however, look like they were doing some dock repair work that day, which at the time was my thought why the 3rd vessel was absent, or more importantly, killing 2 birds with 1 stone: dock repairs and boat refit. Rambling aside, I have no idea where the 3rd boat is either. . .

If she's in refit, I wonder if they're Coastalizing her, SeaBus style, making her look more like her new sister inside?

The Burrard _____ (the one that has been out of service) has been repainted into translink's new "Sweep-R" scheme (grey, black and blue) and actually looks very nice. I am wondering if it had an MLU of some kind, as a new scheme on a transit vehicle indicates refurbishment.

Thanks for the update. I just went on a rant about TL spending money on Sea Buses that are pretty immediately being replaced, but then realized they need to be painted regardless
