Just wondering what has happened to MV Hyak? I haven't seen her around lately. Is she in the yard for repairs and upgrade? I heard that she was scheduled for a ADA compliance upgrade including the installation of a elevator.

No, she is in getting new engines. My father's firm is doing work on her at a Todd Shipyard Facility.

Well then that project must have been completed cause I actually got to see the engines right on sight down at Todd. She must have them installed already.

I just checked out the bid page on WSF and indeed, they are replacing her engines. I can't imagine why they're doing that for a boat they don't intend to keep....Unless it was a matter of replace the engines or the boat wasn't going to run any more. It does seem like WSF is doing a lot of upgrade work on her lately (new engines, elevator, new car deck lighting). -- LB

Could it be that WSF has had a change of mind about MV Hyak? It doesn't seem reasonable that they would re-engine and then quickly retire her. I thought it was a nutty idea to even consider retiring her in the 1st place.
What more do they have to do to put her in 1st class shape like others in her class? I would think that with new engines, the ADA upgrades, and the limited yard work she received 2 or 3 years ago, she should be in fairly good shape.......that is good for another 20 years or so.
It is stupid to think she won't be needed. WSF needs to consider adding 3rd vessels on several runs during the busy summer weekends. MV Hyak should fit those needs quite well.

I think the Hyak should stay in if you can refurbish her for a cheap price. What I am very angry about are certain terms in the Jones Act because then we could get cheaper shipwork in Canada, Get ships built their too and it would be saving millions of dollars.

That is ture and false, three engines were from the Spokane and one is from the Walla WallaHmmmm. Did the other vessels in her class receive new engines during their rehab? Guess they don't make engines to last these days. MV Vashon kept her Washington Diesel purring for 50 years. Actually it ran a bit longer; I toured MV Vashon at the dock here in Ketchikan just a few days before she was sadly wrecked. Also I don't think MV Olympic was ever given a new engine.

Why give her the Jumbo's engines? Cheaper than rebuilding the ones already in the Hyak? I would assume they gave the Jumbos new engines to make them last another 20 years.

I do not know, I will ask my father on these questions because his company, Marine Systems Incorporated did the work on her engines. Here is the answer, The Hyak had EMD 567 turbochargers, so power was limited by intake air.

From what I've read, the engines on the Yakima & Kaleetan were rebuilt instead of replaced. Not sure if the same is true for the Elwha. The Olympic never got a new engine. I think WSF had considered replacing the engines (I seem to recall reading something about that in an article in the Vashon Beachcomber in the early 80's that had also mentioned that WSF was considering lengthening the Hiyu). -- LB

Has anyone seen MV Hyak since she has returned to service from her overhaul? I was wondering if they spruced her up a bit along with replacing her engines and adding a elevator? She is currently running in the San Juan Islands. With projected increases in traffic, it would be really stupid to send her to a early retirement?

If you can figure out the cost to do an overhaul and the engines are refurbished off the Walla Walla FYI. According to some info off WSF website, it is actually more cost efficient to run a Jumbo Mark II on the San Juans. Perhaps maybe make new vessels with specialized purpolsion systems that would reduce the wake yet have the capacity. evergreenfleet, do you know where the Yakima and Kaleetan are?

The Yakima is at Todd shipyard. Hmmm... didn't see her there last Friday (the drydock she was in had been lowered the previous day). I looked carefully (I go over the high-level West Seattle bridge, so I have a fairly good view of the shipyard), but didn't see any sign of her. I'll check again tonight. On a sidenote, it looked like the Christine Anderson (Pierce Co. ferry) was in the same drydock as the Yakima. -- LB

And the Elwha is due to head for Todd Shipyard today, where, hopefully, they'll be able to get her fixed in short order...certainly under 6 months with any luck. The sooner, the better. I was looking at the current IFB's and saw one for the Issaquah (she would be out of service for most of the summer). If both the Sealth & Issaquah go out of service for the summer, then there won't be anything in the reserve fleet. -- LB
