This is just a little late, but I got around to making m very own tribute video for the Hyak. As my favorite, Super, it's fitting that I put a couple hour of time into putting together a video commemorating her career. So here it is, enjoy! And as always, here's a link to my channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UC1a4i9gZihBWaMEtkKgUsCA

Yesterday I got to ride aboard the Hyak on its final round trip out of Bremerton. Definetly a bittersweet moment as I will be sad to see it go, but I'm glad that I was able to take part in this final sailing. Btw this is a Photo Heavy post, so here we go! We'll start with the classic Bremerton thru-shot as she approaches the terminal for the second to last time She's still one of the better looking ferries in the fleet in my opinion; a much cleaner design than the newer ferries. I love that she still has the old style pilothouse windows too. I have a love-hate relationship with the Supers. I find them aesthetically pleasing, but operationally speaking they do have, to put it gently, shortcomings. Those old style pilothouse windows restrict the view from the interior a lot more than you'd expect; they're too narrow for today's (and for that matter, 1967's) cars; and frankly, they're a pain to load. Still, it bums me out to see the Hyak go. Her lack of refurbishment extended to the pilothouses, which meant the original controls were largely intact, and that alone made for an enjoyable challenge. She was/is my favorite of the Supers.

Today's ferry foto for 22 September 2020 is the retired MV Hyak: MV Hyak in A Sunset by Joe A. Kunzler, on Flickr More pictures to come, but really want to spread around my ferry foto 4 the day. Remind me and hopefully you too of a more... pleasant time.

I had occasion to ride the Edmonds-Kingston ferry a few times over Christmas Week (could have been my first WSF ride since moving out of state six years ago) and Hyak sure looks sad and forlorn at the Kingston tie-up slip.

This was a hard sight to see pulling into Kingston, so I decided to legally get a closer view from the dock to the Kitsap Transit ferries... HDR of the Sad Carcass That Is the MV Hyak in 2021 by Joe A. Kunzler, on Flickr You can also clearly see the ferry from the Edmonds side also. One wonders if WSF is parking this retired vessel to raise awareness of WSF's fleet age...

Wowza Barnacle... that's how overstretched Eagle Harbor is?
Sure be nice if WSF did more to defend herself in the public square.

Wowza Barnacle... that's how overstretched Eagle Harbor is? Sure be nice if WSF did more to defend herself in the public square. Didn't they store a Steel Electric or two at Kingston before their eventual fate? Looking at satellite imagery it appears there is room for up to 6 vessels at Eagle Harbor. If Klahowya and Elwha are still tied up there, adding in Wenatchee, Suquamish, and Spokane means 5 spaces taken up. Probably need to keep the 6th slip free for contingencies.

Didn't they store a Steel Electric or two at Kingston before their eventual fate? I think Klickitat was at Kingston for a short time before eventually joining her sisters at Eagle Harbor. Not sure if any of the others were stored there temporarily or not. I did manage to get some photos of all of the Steel Electrics at Eagle Harbor just prior to their final disposition. Klickitat was actually moored at Bainbridge Terminal's tie-up slip, not over at the VMC.

It sounds like the HYAK is speaking again! Indoors, however. Under the historic 1961 trusses of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair Washington State Coliseum, later known for many years as the Seattle Center Coliseum. Home of the Seattle Supersonics, Seattle Totems, Seattle Thunderbirds, Seattle Storm, some visits by the Harlem Globetrotters, circuses, and a good number of concerts among other events.
Correct me if I'm wrong. I heard from the announcers of Hockey Night In Canada (HNIC) that one of the whistles of the HYAK has been mounted under the trusses and was used twice during Saturday night's home opener of the Seattle Kraken NHL team. It's now a GOAL HORN!
HNIC did well with their coverage of the historic game. They showed marvelous coverage of the history of hockey in Seattle, dating back to the Seattle Metropolitans. They even showed some fans wearing vintage SM sweaters. They "owned" the building after the game with "AFTER HOURS" displayed on the scoreboards with the HNIC logo and Scott Oake interviewed a couple of team members of the Kraken. Lots of great views of Seattle were shown as well as spectacular night views of JM2 ferries.
Welcome back, MV HYAK (your "voice", that is)!

I would have liked to hear it even more. I really enjoyed the whole HNIC program on Saturday night, introducing us viewers to Seattle and that new-old arena with that historic roof.

Final from Tuesday night:
MV HYAK's whistle - 5 Habs - 1
First home victory for the Kraken!
Le Canadiens must be scratching their heads wondering what happened to them last night. Now, they have to swim in a Shark tank Thursday night. OUCH!
The Kraken will sure keep the old HYAK's whistle busy sounding as more pucks will find their way past visiting net minders and into the nets this season!

Impressive, but the Blackhawks one at their old palace is tops! And, that 40,000 pipe Barton Organ in the old Chicago Stadium! Organists had to watch the number of stops (tablets) activated or anything glass would break and shatter!! AND, IT HAS HAPPENED!!! One night, a fight erupted after a disputed boxing decision. Al Melgard tried to settle the crowd. He added too many stops and this caused a shattering of glass (including light bulbs) that rained down on everyone. Last hope? The National Anthem. Order restored!! Their goal horn didn't break any glass, I don't think. I guess the HYAK's whistle is working fine in the (CPA) Coliseum. No reports of glass broken yet. Would the louder QUEEN OF NANAIMO whistles cause any damage inside a rink? Very interesting question. I've heard a 16,000 pipe organ played in a concert. That's loud! Maybe a little louder than a normal ferry whistle. I need to go to Macy's in Philadelphia one day to hear the 28,000 pipe Wanamaker Grand Court Organ in recital.

The Hyak was towed back to Eagle Harbor yesterday. No further info... My folks sold the house I grew up in in Seattle in 2020 and moved to the Kingston area. I've seen her decaying at the Kingston terminal on my last few trips to the Seattle area. Her condition, tied up, covered with moss and rust, in sight of boarding passengers was embarrassing. Even more so considering she was tied up in service ready condition due to a legislative budget that punished the ferry system as state revenues continue a strong upward trajectory. Both Nisqually and Evergreen State were tied up "retired" at Eagle Harbor in the 2000s for longer than Hyak at Kingston, and didn't look nearly as bad as Hyak.
