"rescue" it is...Um, yeah...So many things I could say Too bad the Rhody is not operable. There's really a need for a joint ownership between PC and WSF of the STEILACOOM II and CHRISTINE ANDERSON. Unless she's in maintenance, the 50-car CA could have been on the PDF-TAH run tomorrow morning rather than the 34-car HIYU. Except for rare occasions, PC doesn't operate the ST2 and CA together on their routes out of STE.

Except for rare occasions, PC doesn't operate the ST2 and CA together on their routes out of STE. But how much money should we spend on that type of contigency stuff? We don't have that much spare cash to go around. PC's already done a few favors for WSF in the last few years... I'd be curious about what thier views towards WSF after the loan of STII for so long are... Anyways there is frequently absolutely no spare boat other than Hiyu during the summer. The fact that the state mothballed the Nisqually for so long shows they seemed to not be worried about this risk... or not care or that it wasn't cost effective etc... Though even accounting for Nisqually's mothballs you could argue with the retirement of the Rhody we are still down 1 boat (4 SE's + Rhody -> 3 KdTs) We have not one but two active boats down today, Chetzemoka all day and Sealth for much of the day. Additionally the Klahowya is in maintenance with the drive motor stuff when she really ideally shouldn't have been. Sadly it's not off season or the extra KdT would've been around hopefully. I think today is just well a bad day that reflects on the overall age of the fleet and the tenderness of certain boats with gold stripes.

When Gov. Christine had that great idea of trying to give the State Ferry System to the locals, they were in process of making deal with PC to back up PD/T. The Anderson Island locals heard about it, got upset, after their boat being at Keystone for two years, and the promotional minded Ferry Director was re leased from his job. What makes sense does not often happen, ah, politics.

Apparently, there are some pressure problems with the fire pumps. They are trying to figure out how to quickly and efficiently fix it.

The bid package for the Chetzemoka's upcoming dry docking has been posted. It looks like she will be getting new props she needs since the originals were defective. The the package says this is at "No Cost" to the contract which I hope means that Vigor is paying for the complete replacement. She will also be getting the slight changes to her rubrail and the standard painting and other work.

The Chetzemoka will be on the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route from December 31 to January 7.

I think this is the first time Vigor has drydocked a KDT after construction. Dakota Creek has done virtually all the drydocking of these new ferries. I guess this wouldn't have happened at the Anacortes yard.

Hey, maybe we can make an insurance claim and total it. That way we get the money for a replacement and the Insurance Company has to dispose of it. This sounds like a win to me!

On the Kitsap sun article there is a photo that is very similar to this oneby Steve. It is sure taken from the wheelhouse of the Salish during the open house at the exact same time... Ferrynut perhaps? or SS San Mateo or Kalhoke?

Ferrynut perhaps? or SS San Mateo or Kalhoke? I remember seeing that photo, as well, when I first uploaded mine the night I got back from that open house. I have checked the WSDOT Flickr stream (as a photographer from WSDOT was aboard and took a photo at almost the same time as well), but alas, nope. Not that one, anyways.

Published: Friday, February 15, 2013, 5:35 p.m. State aims to stop ferries from leaning when empty By Jerry Cornfield Washington State Ferries will soon take the lean out of its three newest ferries. Adjustments will be made so the Chetzemoka, Salish and Kennewick will no longer list when the boats are empty, Assistant Secretary of Transportation David Moseley said Thursday. The work involves adding tons of ballast on each vessel. "It's a simple fix," he said. Customers, crew members and lawmakers have complained about the list on the 64-car vessels since the first of the boats, the Chetzemoka, went into service in 2010. They don't like looking at it and worry it will be a cause of future maintenance problems. Moseley said he made the decision in response to the concerns. "We haven't done it because we don't think and we still don't think it creates a long-term problem for the vessels,"he said. Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, applauded the news. "It's a topic of discussion that I've been having with the Department of Transportation for several months now," she said. "I'm pleased they are going to take action." The boats are designed to lean when there are no vehicles because not all the weight is evenly distributed. On each boat, the stairs, elevator and exhaust pipes are grouped together in one spot which puts more weight on that side of the boat, explained Cotty Fay, chief naval architect for the Washington State Ferries. When cars and trucks load, it balances out the vessel, he said. The state plans to pour steel shot – a granular material used for sandblasting – into existing metal box-like containers on top of each boat's two fuel tanks, Fay said. It's going to take about 180,000 pounds of steel shot for the vessels. Moseley estimated the fix will cost $300,000 and be finished by the end of June.
