Today was Dedication Day and Open Ship aboard the KENNEWICK. I began the day by taking the 0800PST sailing aboard the SALISH to Keystone Harbor. Decked out in US and Washington flags, the KENNEWICK readies for her first public boardings. A good side view of the KENNY. Underway for Keystone Harbor. After having breakfast at the Keystone Cafe, I join the Whidbey islanders attending the KENNY's Open Ship on the trip to Port Townsend aboard the SALISH. Arriving Port Townsend again. MV KENNEWICK is ready for us! Permission is granted for us to come aboard! SALISH through the KENNY's porthole. The mayor of the city of Kennewick delivers a great speech. More photos of today's events will be added after I get some lunch and some CHETZEMOKA watching as she has just been directed to return to the San Juans for some more "Island Time" there.

Great pictures of Kenny! Thanks! Sadly it'll be dark (or nearly so) when Chetzy gets near to Port Townsend it looks like. But when she heads back south maybe WSF will take the chance for a photo-op with all three boats together. :-) Such an occurance will likely be very rare.
Chetzy certainly is hauling headed north though, going unusually fast for her, must be a heckuva a shaky ride, she's actually making her "official" 16-knot top speed according to vessel tracker etc. Albiet she likely has some tide help.

Thanks for the great photo coverage, Ferrynut. Kennewick looks identical to Salish. We'll be riding Salish tomorrow morning on her 9:30 PT-KEY sailing.

Looks like the Kenny is supposed to debut tomorrow on the PT/Keystone route. Is that still on the schedule? Is she outfiitted and crewed or does the crew transfer from the Salish when she arrives?

She's been parked next to the Salish for weeks, ready to go. I'm assuming this will be a bumpless transfer.

Well according to the VTS, she is at Kingston right now. Right you are! Perhaps it got a little too stormy for her to be docked in the tie up slip at the Harrison Terminal, Port Townsend. Or, some work may be being done there. Very interesting.

Any good reason why the Kenny has not started sailing this week?

I'm pretty sure they were a week late starting sea trials. There's been some funny stuff going on; not in-line with what the vessel maintenance schedule says...as is expected when we're dealing with big complex machines.

Life's like that sometimes, too. It doesn't always go by the clipboard.

I heard that was was some sort of issue with the USCG concerning the vessel's certificate of inspection.

I heard that was was some sort of issue with the USCG concerning the vessel's certificate of inspection. WSF was supposed to conduct fire and abandon ship drills by January 31 and haven't done so according to this: cgmix.uscg.mil/PSIX/PSIXDetails.aspx?VesselID=1046775(you may have to click on the Submit button in the "Summary of Coast Guard Contacts" section) Additionally WSF either hasn't obtained a Certificate of Documentation or has obtained one but hasn't posted it (due date of 11/30/2011).

Thanks for the link, San Mateo. Off hand, I'd say she's back in PT and ready to go, though I've been wrong before. The undone drills might have been done, as the last page update was Jan. 30. Maybe WSDOT just wants to keep that new boat smell for as long as possible.

Kenny's delay frustrates me. Do any of you ferry nuts know when she is expected to do her maiden voyage?

Kenny's delay frustrates me. Do any of you ferry nuts know when she is expected to do her maiden voyage? Be patient. She'll be placed on the run when she and all parties are ready for her and themselves to do so. Don't rush her.

But really, did she encounter trouble during trials, or really still just behind?

The USCG link San Mateo posted now lists the need for Kenny to get and post the Certificate of Documentation, and the drills.
Seems to me that WSF is delaying service for some unknown reason. Crew training is done, the boat runs, and she no workie? No one cares at this point--time for a breakdown, so as to see if WSF's jewell gets her cardeck dirty.

As for start of service date, maybe the third date is the charm.
