Here are some webam photos of the KENNEWICK's first public sailing yesterday: Firstly, here's a photo of the KENNY at the EHVMC alongside the HIYU in this "big and small" photo on the RHODODENDRON's final Open Ship day this past Saturday. The KENNY looked ready to go. After arriving from her 1330PST trip from Keystone Harbor, the SALISH wastes no time in leaving Port Townsend. She didn't want to stay to see her sister KENNEWICK begin service, just in case she's called upon to replace the CHETZEMOKA which had an overheated stack that day. The SALISH ended up at the VMC after the CHETZY was fixed to resume her duty on the Tahlequah run. SALISH on her way out. The KENNEWICK departs on her first public sailing. On her way to Keystone Harbor. With the SALISH passing Marrowstone Island. SALISH disappears, KENNEWICK is now in business on the Port Townsend to Keystone Harbor at Coupeville run.

In Port Townsend again, Tuesday, May 15, 2012. KENNEWICK in Port Townsend. On her way to Keystone Harbor again. The KENNEWICK stands outside while the SALISH arrives. The KENNY operated the Number Two Schedule that day. She is to assume the Number One Schedule after the SALISH made fast. SALISH sidesteps over to the tie up slip. KENNEWICK arrives at the dock again to finish the day's schedule. The KENNEWICK and SALISH began working together on this run on Mother's Day. This is the first time since 2007 when two-vessel service began in the Spring on the Keystone Harbor run. I'm getting ready to ride the KENNEWICK for the first time. Seeing double! That truck should have delivered a piano for us to play on board! Port Townsend dock. SALISH from the KENNEWICK. KENNEWICK's Sun Deck. This will be used well during warm Summer days. SALISH from the KENNEWICK. SALISH from the KENNEWICK. SALISH from the KENNEWICK. Departing Port Townsend. My first trip aboard the KENNEWICK. MV SALISH. Port Townsend from the KENNEWICK. Port Townsend from the KENNEWICK. From the observatory. Nearing Keystone Harbor. The KENNY runs really nice. Underway from Keystone Harbor. Like the SALISH, the KENNY has that same "clackety" sound from her propeller. This is usually only when she departs Keystone Harbor like a rocket. The sound goes away when she's outside the harbor and on her crossing as she runs slower than her full speed. Sometimes you'll hear the sound when she has to speed up to meet schedule or marine traffic. Port Townsend from a dimmed observatory. Arriving Port Townsend in the night. KENNY's work is done for the day. Time for a good night's sleep.

Lots of photos from today, Wednesday, May 16, 2012. Early in the morning. KENNEWICK gets ready for her first sailing of the day. Underway on her 0630PDT sailing. With Union Wharf. The KENNEWICK returns on her first westbound trip. The KENNEWICK. This photo suggest that the KENNEWICK would land at the old Quincy Street dock. She bypasses and heads for Harrison Street instead. From a favorite lunch restaurant. The Nifty Fifties. This eatery has a lot of vintage furnishings and has that 1950s feel to it. It even has a restored jukebox with lots of hits from that era. www.niftyfiftyspt.com/index.htmFrom the SALISH. From the SALISH. From the SALISH. From the SALISH. From the SALISH. From the SALISH. KENNEWICK From Fort Casey. KENNEWICK From Fort Casey. KENNEWICK From Fort Casey. KENNEWICK From Fort Casey. I went to a track meet in Oak Harbor today. Oak Harbor Stadium. I was there to see a new found favorite athlete. He placed fourth in High Jump. In the winter, he is a star basketball player and is taking his talents with him to the Big Sky state next season. Here comes the KENNEWICK! I took Island Transit to and from the meet. No problems riding this transit system with no fare boxes. The drivers are great. Cleanest transit system in this part of our world with no ads on the sides and no awful wraps. Entering Keystone Harbor. In Keystone Harbor. In the dock. Time to get aboard! Underway for Port Townsend. Keystone Harbor. Outside of the harbor. Leaving Whidbey behind. Nearing Port Townsend. Arriving with the SALISH in the dock. KENNEWICK and SALISH. Port Townsend Dock at Harrison Street. KENNEWICK and SALISH. KENNEWICK on her way to Keystone Harbor on her final round trip of the day. Arriving Port Townsend on her final trip of the day. Ferries look neat in the night. Tomorrow, in the early morning, I head back to the big city. Hope you enjoyed my latest photo offerings of these KDT ferries. END

Finally something you can use the saddle lounges for, a piano room. Maybe we could even have a dueling piano lounge concept.

Maybe they ought to point the #1 end of one and the #2 end of the other in the same direction, which would in effect make the "leans" symmetrical. Then the question would be, which direction should the "leans" be, toward each other, or against each other? Either way would be an improvement, geometrically.

Kennewick passing by Point Wilson I love that beach vantage point at Fort Flagler park. It's one of the best spots for photographing ships on that route.

My first ever experience aboard a Washington State Ferry, on the evening of June 3rd, 2012. The MV Kennewick was the ship that managed to work into my travel itinerary. I was staying the night in Port Townsend at the time. So I did the sunset cruise during the final round trip for the day on the Port Townsend - Coupeville route. Also having already traveled on the Island Home back in 2007, it was nice to compare the differences between the two vessels. I didn't want to take too many ship specific photos, since I figured everyone else had done a good job of that already. So I just took some scenery shots more than anything. En route The Sewage Pump Ashore system. Very similar, if not the same as BC Ferries Sewage Pump Ashore systems Kennewick at Coupeville Terminal

Saturday, August 10, 2012 Took a ride aboard the MV KENNEWICK again. This time driving my car aboard a KDT ferry for my first time. KENNEWICK arrives Port Townsend. She throws a lot of white stuff when docking. Underway for Keystone. Fun on the Sun Deck. While I was on my way to the south part of Whidbey Island, I stopped at the old Keystone dock. MV KENNEWICK from the location of the old Black Ball dock. Remnants of the old dock still remains. A building was put on the driveway to the apron. Old and new meets. The KENNEWICK is soon to depart the newer man made Keystone Harbor on another voyage to Port Townsend. Just pretending I was getting off the old puddle jumper and entering traffic on Whidbey Island. Returning from south Whidbey, I boarded the KENNEWICK again for Port Townsend. KENNEWICK arrives Keystone Harbor. Keystone Harbor at Coupeville. Underway for Port Townsend. Arriving Port Townsend with the MV SALISH out on the bay. A cruise ship is sighted across the Sun Deck. Time for me to head below to my car.

I took a little road trip on Sunday to clear my head from the peak season grind at work. I wasn't intending on going anywhere; I didn't bring my camera with me, nor my passport. I was just going to make a quick jaunt to Alderwood Mall. Rather than get off I-5, I just kept on going.
After wandering up Highway 9 nearly all the way to the Canadian Border, passing through some of my old college hang outs in Bellingham, and quick haul down Chuckanut Drive I made my way across the Deception Pass Bridge to Whidbey Island. By about 1745 I'd arrived at Keystone and purchased my ticket for the 1800 sailing to Port Townsend.
This would be my first trip on a K-D-T class vessel (what? a seven year member of this forum that didn't run out a ride the Chetzy on her first day in service? I know, I know). This was probably my first trip on Port Townsend - Keystone in well over a decade (the Klickitat was so dismal to ride on I did not go out of my way to take this route).
My quick thoughts on the Kennewick:
*Very well done interior spaces; I love the green flooring and green seating. The saddle lounges had very little seating. I don't see any picture up-thread of the Kennewick's saddle lounges as delivered. I know early pictures of the Chetzy showed one side full of passenger seating and the other side with nothing but bike racks. On the Kennewick, the non-bike side had maybe a dozen seats, and the bike side had all but two of the bike racks removed and about six seats. WSF needs to get some seating installed in these spaces...
*The open upstairs deck is very pleasant. The full-width bridges create a wind break making for a very calm environment up top.
*As we pulled out of Keystone both the Sunday Norwegian and Holland America sailings were steaming up Admiralty Inlet. The Kennewick did not handle the wake from these cruise ships as well as I'd expected from a ferry designed to cross in heavy seas. I am curious how they handle when the wind is howling and the weather is severe in Admiralty Inlet.
*Overall vessel speed seemed very slow.
