Just curious as to what is happening with the Elwha??? Where is she now??? Are they planning to put her back on the Sidney run or are they gonna continue to use the Chelan???

According to the WSF website, the Elwha will be out of service until February of 2007. She was scheduled for major repairs and upgrades before she lost her drive motor.
As for her return to the Sidney run, we will have to wait until next Spring to see. I cannot imagine WSF choosing to use the Chelan as the only vessel for the Sidney run.
Other members of this forum probably have better info than me in regards to the Elwha and her current state of repair....

The Elwha is currently in dry dock at Dakota Creek shipyard here in Anacortes having a bunch of work done on her, including a new paint job. Word is we'll be lucky to see her before July of next year. WSF has no choice but to use the Chelan, she's the only other SOLAS rated vessel.

I would start refurbishing the Hyak if the Elwha is going to be out for awhile.

They are doing much more "catch up" maintenance then they had initially figured on having to do...and her steel was more wasted in the passenger cabin then they'd figured on as well.

Well it shouldent be too bad during the off season with the Chelan as traffic isent that busy during that season. Has the route been booked up this summer where you cant get a reservation for the Sidney to Anacortes route or has it been not too bad? I see the odd time the traffic from Sidney and it looks pretty full.

The last CEO of WSF kept pushing off maintenance projects...something you can't do with a something that spends its life in salt water. We've have a full boat several times during the summer for both sailings...I've not heard of anyone having been bumped into the next day for reservations, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

I wonder what kind of "unexpected repairs" will need to be done to the Issaquah once she goes in for her (very badly needed) repainting (whenever that happens) considering how bad the rust is. Have any other "outside of normal maintenance" projects been put on hold due to the problems with the Elwha?

I would start refurbishing the Hyak if the Elwha is going to be out for awhile. I thought that quite a bit of refurbishing on MV Hyak was completed last winter. This included the installation of newly rebuilt engines among other things. Is there more work needed on MV Hyak? During my annual trek to the San Juans this summer, we rode on MV Yakima and MV Illahee and had a good look at MV Hyak at the dock at Friday Harbor. Both MV Hyak and MV Illahee appeared to be in good repair as far as rust/paint were concerned. MV Yakima looked quite shabby, however. We didn't see MV Kaleetan, but I think she was repainted last spring.

Interior work is needed, my father's company did the rebuilding of some of the jumbo engines. I actually got to see it last year before it went in. If the Elwha is going to start the Kalakala mechanical plague, better put some extra years onto the Hyak.

There's been some shuffling, but other than the Issaquah not getting painted this summer, none that I've been told about. FYI, the Sealth is behind and won't be back until at least October I hear.

I did a trip to San Juan Island today. Rode on the Yakima on the way there, and the Hyak on the way back. The Yakima did seem too have more rust than the Hyak, but the Hyak still has her 1960's interior which is looking pretty shabby. The Yakima's interior looked really nice cept for dirty floors. Also got to see the Elwha in the drydock at Dakota Creek, you can get pretty close to her. All of her windows are covered up for painting. One thing that I noticed is that the three Supers in service get tied up at Anacortes overnight, and since the Elwha is only about two miles from Anacortes, all four sisters are together!

FYI, the Sealth is behind and won't be back until at least October I hear. How'd that happen? My guess is when they started yanking out her interior and pulling up the old floor tile etc they found there was more extensive wastage of the steel deck than they thought...same thing that happened to all the other refurbished Issaquahs.

Is it poor design, poor build quality, cheap materials or all of the above.
I know a salt-water environment is quite hostile to steel,but the floors inside the ferries should not be corroding if they have been covered since new.

It was cheap materials and poor quality at the hands of Marine Power and Equipment. The floors aren't impervious to spills, flooding from over flowing toilets, humidity, etc, plus their multiple daily mopping. Moisture can get in under a floor quite easily, particularly if it wasn't installed well to begin with.

Since we are getting close to the start of the Summer Schedule, I thought I would inquire if anyone has an update on how close the Elwha is to being ready for service.
I know it has been posted as of now that she is a good month away at best, but some inside info would be apprieciated.

Sea trials are scheduled to begin this week. How long they're going to be is anyone's guess. It really depends on how well it performs.
