Why does the Kaleetan and Yakima have big windows Mid-life upgrades in the late-1990s/early 2000s, which included a complete upgrade and overhaul of the pilothouses. The Hyak never got its midlife upgrade (hence the original 1967 interior) and the Elwha had its mid-life upgrade stunted by damage that resulted from an unfortunate winter storm in 1990.

Their freeboard is just about the same as the other classes in the system, with the exception of the M.V. Elwha. The M.V. Elwha sits a bit lower because of the modifications made to accommodate SOLAS equipment and because of damage that resulted from being violently thrown against a dock during a 1990 winter storm.
They appear to sit lower because their hulls have a canoe-like hull, which also throws off little to no wake (again, with the exception of the Elwha).

If you're seeing one end of the boat lower than the other, that's more likely a result of the load conditions than anything inherent. The Supers, under ideal conditions, sit more-or-less level. And the Supers (as noted, with the exception of the Elwha) do have really nice wake profiles, but... honestly, the Olympic class boats look to be even better. I'll have to try to remember to get a closer look at it sometime. (I only think about it when I'm not in a position to run down to the car deck and check. )

It's tragic reporting that the last time I posted here, I was happily married. In the last 8 months a lot has happened and sadly I am no longer. On New Year's Eve, a friend of mine took me to Seattle for New Year's Eve and while waiting for the Chimacum to arrive, I captured these two of the Kaleetan. It had been tied up in the No. 2 slip at Bremerton. I decided to capture her from two angles, one from above and the other down below. M.V. As the Kaleetan still has about a month left on her summer Anacortes stint for the second year now, thought I would get up to Anacortes early to get a few pictures of her first departure before my sailing to Sidney.

Finally got some good photos of Kaleetan with her gold stripe: approaching Anacortes with Mt. Baker approaching Orcas

Entangled crab pots have taken the Kaleetan out of service since about 4pm today. The 825p to FH and back was cancelled as well, and to allow for underwater inspections tomorrow morning, the 415a to Friday Harbor and the 725a to Orcas Island from Anacortes will both be cancelled. WSF hopes to have more information later on tomorrow following the underwater inspection of the damage.

Since the Kaleetan has finally returned to Bremerton, I got a chance to ride her for a couple hours back while the sun still shone in Seattle .

First post in quite some time! A lot has happened since I last posted here. I met an amazing woman (well, we knew each other for a long time, and found that we had feelings for each other).... We made things official in October with us, so I decided to take my girlfriend and her two oldest children to the waterfront fountain park in Bremerton today. While there I decided to shoot the Kaleetan on approach to the ferry dock. Needless to say, they were in awe at the size of the Kaleetan when it began to dock! M.V. Since we're all cooped up at home with no ferries, thought I'd share some photos of one of my favorite ferry interiors from Anacortes for Labor Day 2019 (before all the people rushed the cabin, of course). Enjoy! And may we all get to ride a ferry again, very soon. Stay healthy, everyone.

Well yes, we are kind of cooped up, certainly with no ferry rides. So, I'm curious... why do you like this ferry's interior? WSF vessels have always seemed really bland and functional inside to me. How is the Kaleetan different, in your view?

How is the Kaleetan different, in your view? Well obviously one of the most 'unique' cabin choices would have been Elwha or Hyak.... but I think this is one of the next best still standing. I'm drawn to the almost-near perfect symmetry in many places onboard (yeah, that's true on every ferry, but I like this one just for the looks) while still looking incredibly simple.

I will say this: the passenger cabin on the Super Class vessels seems more open and spacious, and less broken up, than the Olympic Class cabins. Part of that feeling may be that the Supers have a slightly higher ceiling than the Olympics. The other thing I have noticed in recent years is how worn Kaleetan and Yakima's cabins have become. I guess that shouldn't be a surprise given their age, and that it's been 20 years since their MLU's.

i dont really like the interiors on the super class except for the Hyak and Yakima. The super class feels like a mens restroom.

On a trip to Seattle back in November, we ended up riding the Kaleetan to Bremerton and back a couple times, and off all places, Seattle is not where I was expecting to get to see the same ferry at two different slips in the same day. Some undisclosed issue with Slip 2 caused the 1330 sailing to Bremerton to arrive and load in Seattle from Slip 1 instead of Slip 2, even though the 1110 had left from Slip 2. No big deal or anything, but just cool to see! Definitely like that Slip 1 view better, not gonna lie!
