Kaleetan!! Another boat I would like to take a trip on along with the Evergreen State! Those are the next two boats I am trying to get on. I have always loved the Supers even though I have only been on the Elwha and Hyak. I like the Kaleetan's interior from what I have seen.

I really wish that the colors were a little darker though. The lighter colors attract dirt (well, no much more than the darker colors...the lighter ones make the dirt very visible) and the materials used for seating on the Kaleetan seem to be resistant to being cleaned. The boats that have seating that uses the shiny vinyl or whatever seem to do better. The non-shiny material (sorta matte textured) hold the dirt and refuse to be cleaned (at least with the cleaning stuff that WSF has-that's a whole different story )

Yakima has the best passenger cabin decor, IMO.

It looks like a matte finish, but if you get out a magnifying glass (or just look very closely) it has a texture... kind of /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ and it goes on two axes, so it isn't grooved, it's pitted. Nothing we have is small enough to get the divots cleaned, and none of the chemicals we have had in the last fifteen years are very good at loosening it. This is why a periodic effort to make it go away happens.

The frame pattern is always the last to get covered when it snows or is icy IMG_0985 by zargoman, on Flickr Like the Hyak, the Kaleetan has quite a few mismatched shades on the benches. The No 1 end has light blue benches and the No 2 end has dark blue. The worn/vandalized light blue parts are being replaced by dark blue. Then there's one that I can't figure out where it came from.

The one odd shade of blue looks like 'Elwha blue' at first glance.

The one odd shade of blue looks like 'Elwha blue' at first glance. Don't know why, but it reminds me of Issaquah before her cabin renovation.

Does the big K have ANY future assignments in the Islands?

Does the big K have ANY future assignments in the Islands? Not according to the latest maintenance schedule which is projected out to the end of March. Kaleetan is scheduled to be at Bremerton for the duration of the Winter Schedule. After that, who knows? But, Bremerton has pretty much become Kaleetan's home. The islands used to get Kaleetan in the summers, but that hasn't been the case for the last two years.

To keep the crewing costs down, it's unlikely that the Kaleetan will be putting in any long-term gigs anywhere but Bremerton.

Dug one up from my archives. Here's Kaleetan at Orcas Island in October of 1999, just coming fresh out of refit - this was her first assignment. I miss seeing Kaleetan in the islands. That was her home for many years.

I miss seeing Kaleetan in the islands. That was her home for many years. Me too. But times change and needs change. The Kaleetan's new-found speed was needed on the Bremerton run (EGFleet can attest to that) and the mighty Hyak was sent to the San Juans where we could weather a slightly slower boat.

Kaleetan was pulled to EH due to some sort of problem. She is supposed to be out for two days.

With some scheduled 10 minute turnarounds, the Kaleetan's speed is most valuable. Although, the Hyak was making the trip in about 55 minutes, as was the Kaleetan. I'm sure that is not near the top speed though. Edit: the Walla Walla just did a 54 min trip with no Rich Passage slowdown.

Took a crossing on the Kaleetan on my way up to Kenmore today, and noticed that the hawsers on #1 and #2 and the inward side of the bulwarks had been painted. Also looked like the Kaleetan has had some slight interior mods done to the booths. Alas, I didn't get to make a repeat crossing, and instead took the M.V. Sardine Can, erm, M.V. Kitsap. Grabbed some pix. M.V. Kaleetan by Fire Mountain Photography, on Flickr M.V. Kaleetan by Fire Mountain Photography, on Flickr

Took a crossing on the Kaleetan... and noticed that the hawsers on #1 and #2... had been painted. Hawsers are large mooring lines. What exactly got painted?

The car deck and gallery decks, and the inside of the bulwarks at #1 and #2 ends. Plus the mooring cleats.

One photo of the Hyak taken at a pit-stop in Seattle on my way down to San Francisco during March: I think you meant KALEETAN. It's quite awkward to see the Winslow KALEETAN on the Bremerton run and the Bremerton HYAK in the San Juans. The KALEETAN was originally a Winslow ferry before moving to Kingston in 1973 and on to the San Juans in 1974.

I copies and pasted the post from the Hyak thread and forgot to change the ship name on the comment. Oops!

Got upclose and personal with several ferries today while doing a day sail and showing some out of town visitors around Elliot Bay. But this pic of Kaleetan turned out the best given the poor lighting today. One thing I noticed which I oddly never had before was the swarm of seagulls that frequently follows each of the inbound boats as soon as they approach the terminal. Attachments:

It's not just while they're inbound, they seem to have a "Seagull Escort" as I like to call it, at all times during the crossing.
It doesn't happen nearly as bad with the Kitsap. The Kaleetan, however, can see anywhere between a half dozen to three dozen seagulls escorting the ferry all the way from Bremerton to Seattle and back.
