I'm more curious as to why they didn't drop anchors out in Rich Passage, but we will find out in time I'm sure. Do Super Class ferries even have anchors? Or do any WSF ferries have them? I really don't remember ever seeing an anchor onboard or winch system for one. Yes, they have anchors. the reason you don't want to drop anchor in rich passage Ferries do not have the right of way there. Puget Sound naval ship yard does.

Ferry Alert: Walla Walla Returns to Seattle/Bremerton Route This Afternoon
The Walla Walla will return to service on the Seattle/Bremerton route later this afternoon. The 188-vehicle vessel will provide additional capacity for the route now that it has been cleared for service following needed repairs after the boat ran aground a couple weeks ago in mid-April. The boat’s first sailing will be the 4:15 p.m. departure from Bremerton to Seattle.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.

I wonder if it could be related to grounding?

After the Wally's grounding last spring, it got me wondering where that boat went aground in Eagle Harbor way back in the 80's. Is that something that someone here would remember?

After the Wally's grounding last spring, it got me wondering where that boat went aground in Eagle Harbor way back in the 80's. Is that something that someone here would remember? It was in 1981, in heavy fog. I believe Walla Walla grounded on Tyee Shoal just outside of Eagle Harbor - you know, that sand bar that the ferries have to slow down for and skirt around when doing the Seattle-Bainbridge run.

Instead of rounding the usual marker outside of Eagle Harbor, the BIG W turned shy and got herself stuck on the shallow shoal. If I remember correctly, a newspaper headline told it all: WALLA WALLOWEDAll ships passing by as well as the ferries going in and out of EH had to slow down to prevent their wakes from tipping the "V" hulled vessel over. Other ferries filled in for the WW. When the tide had risen, the media mentioned that waves from passing ships rocked the 440-foot ferry. I guess it was meant to help free her keel from the shoal. Very lucky she didn't tip over.
