Just wondering.............. I noticed that MV Sealth is out of service on stand-by for this busy holiday weekend. She is soon scheduled to replace MV Evergreen State in the Islands as Evergreen goes into dry-dock to complete repainting. If the Sealth is not in for repairs, why haven't they she been sent to the Islands a bit early to help out with the backlog of holiday traffic? Because, as has been stated numerous times on this forum, the state does NOT have the money to run extra service on holidays anymore, and hasn't for about, oh, 30 years. (I'm not saying I agree with this, either, for the record--it is just how it is.) I suspect the kept her on standby in case there was a vessel breakdown somewhere. Better to have the Sealth on hand for Bremerton or Vashon or somewhere than the poky Evergreen. The Sealth can at least maintain the south sound schedules and the Evergreen can't. Luckily that didn't happen--for once. That's two years in a row...maybe three that we've avoided the Independence Day Curse. She is supposed to be moved up today some time to take over for the Evergreen.

And finally, another boat I've not had that many chances to see, the Sealth. Here she is leaving Vashon Island last summer. Enjoy! Jody

Once I finished my business in Seattle, I decided to head south to Tacoma and try to see if I could get some photos of the Sealth pinch-hitting on the Point Defiance-Talequah route. Success! After a prolonged potty/snack stop for my family and me, we managed to get down to the dock just as the Sealth arrived. And, with Mt. Rainier standing so clear, I couldn't help but take at least one photo of the Sealth and one of Washington's most famous mountain landmarks. It was also about this time that I realized that the Sealth wasn't flying any flags at all. What gives there? One thing I will say is that the Sealth makes the little basin and dock at Point Defiance look pretty doggone small... Enjoy!

I was on the Sealth 1:25pm sailing from Anacortes to Friday Harbour Saturday. It was my first time on the Sealth. I thought her interior was really nice. Not much else to say really. Was awesome to get on some more WSF ships.

The Sealth has migrated down to Southworth and I took the 17:40 trip from Fauntleroy tonight. The first set of stairs from the car deck no longer have that brownish coating. It's been removed and now it's gray paint and non-slip covers screwed into them (I'll call it painted/plated) . Most of the stairs on the second set still have the brownish rubber (or whatever it is) coating. Some have been changed to the painted/plated style. description coming by zargoman, on Flickr

Ooohhh...That totally makes sense. They don't look quite as good, but they look a LOT more durable. It was good to replace the entire set of stairs, especially if it will have to be done. Better to get it done all at once instead one at a time. It looks really ghetto right now on the second set of stairs because only a few of them have been redone. Does that mean that the black stairs that have been put on the other boats (Kaleetan, Walla Walla, Issaquah, Tillikum(?) and possibly a few others) are going to have to be replaced too? This is what the Sealth's first set of stairs looked like when the interior refurb. was complete. Sealth 05 by zargoman, on Flickr

Okay, and here is the second set of stairs on the starboard stern (facing the No. 1 end). Sealth by zargoman, on Flickr

The changeout would've probably been a full set if it had been done in the yard. The work was done on the run last fall.

That answers that one. I never saw how bad they got before being replaced. Just by looking, the other brown ones don't look too bad at all.

That's because the tatty ones got replaced. The "lip" on the rubber stair treads apparently doesn't have any reinforcing in it; the stairs themselves are squared off. The lips began to sag, round off, and tear on some of the treads, so they were replaced.

Okay, very interesting. I went over today to do the physical exam and work test that's required to become a terminal worker for WSF. I'll just have to wait and see... Anyways, the Sealth was looking mighty photogenic this morning...Having the Olympics out helped a lot. Sealth has not gotten any attention lately, so I will get the vessel back on track. Maybe it is just me, but two 144 car vessels along side a 90 car vessel does not make sense to me. Is the Sealth showing any signs of capacity issues?

The Sealth is running in the San Juan Islands because of her capacity to haul overheight vehicles. On average, she will fill up on the 8:05 AM from Friday Harbor and the 2:40 PM from Anacortes. Sometimes the 4:15 PM from FH/5:00 PM from Lopez will fill up, too. But out of five round trips a day, I usually see her full up about a trip and a half. I'd say the Sealth can handle her share pretty well.

Okay, I guess that makes some sense, but if the Sealth can handle that traffic, and I KNOW I'll be corrected on this, but if Sealth can handle it, it seems an Issaquah 124 would also handle it fine. Send the super(s) to Bremerton.

The 124s don't have nearly as much tall space as the Supers. The Supers were designed and built with the upper ramps. The Issaquahs lost a good amount of space on the main deck when the upper ramps were put in. Both classes have 7-8' clearance in the tunnels, but the turn to the lower tunnels on the Issaquah 130s is pretty tight and the ramp angle is quite steep. The Supers also have more room to turn cars around when they are on the boat. There is much more space at the end of the boat to get a car from the ramp to the tunnel or to the other ramp when they are turning around on the boat. However, the individual lanes on the Supers seems to be quite a bit more narrow than the Issaquahs. Before working for WSF, I commuted Bremerton/Seattle for 6.5 years and have been on more than my fair share of stuffy and crowded trips on the Kitsap and Chelan and Sealth (and a few on the Issaquah)(and a few on the Tillikum-THAT was bad). I would love to see two Supers or a Jumbo and a Super at Bremerton, but it does not seem to be practical at this time. The Super/Issaquah 130 pairing handles the auto traffic just fine. I don't think they really care about the passenger traffic, unless it was over the legal limit...I don't want to get started on WSFs treatment of passenger comfort at Bremerton. The POFFs were awesome.

But only recovered 20% of the operating cost at the farebox. Those boats were running Porsche service at Ford Escort prices. Not a good investment for the taxpayers.
