Duke Point needs the renovation not Tswwassen, Duke Point has no concession no really good set up. Same with Langdale except the langdale ferry is more frequent rath than the mid-island ferry which has a two .5 hour wait.

have you ever been to tsawwassen on a friday afternoon of a long weekend in the summer. or any friday afternoon in the summer. it needs something for people to do. the duke point terminal is mainly used and was built for commercial traffic. they usually have what they need in the cab of their trucks already.

I think Departure Bay could use an upgrade more than Duke Point, which is fine for now as it is mostly used by commercial traffic. I thought there was rumor in the begining that Duke Point was going to get another berth? But I dont really see the point in that as it only serves one route.

That is what I think the purpose of the second berth would be but it would be more of a hassel for Gabriola residents as Duke Point is way out of town, as most of them I dont think would want to go to Duke Point. It would be a shorter crossing but you wouldent be right in town and especially for all the school kids too and commuters who commute to Naniamo.

I heard that too - it would allow greater operational flexibility for Gabriola and Tsawwassen runs (the Naniamo dock is in need or replacement, I've heard. That would close it for awhile)

even a temp berth would allow for an expansion of routes. IE you could go from Vancouver to Gabriola without having to drive very far, get off the Alberni, and then baord the quinsam for Gabriola.

But the population of gabriola would not like that, it's thier ferry and it's a hassel to get from duke point to nanaimo in a rush say for school.

actually its no thier ferry. its BCF's ferry. and thier docks. and thier property around the docks. if BCF wanted to move it. there would be nothing that the residents could do. But i was thinking more along the lines of 3 locations. sorta like Theis - Islan - Kuper Run

They've been saying they want to put another berth at Duke Point since the place was finnished in June of 1997. The Quinsam has gone to Duke Point before cause they had to close the dock in Nanaimo a few times. If they're gonna move the Nanaimo location for the Gabriola Ferry..It should be berth 1 in Departure Bay. It's all there, just sitting and only used if a ferry breaks down or when Esquimalt is over in the summer or spring

but just think of the risk/ time req'd to do that? either go through McKay Channel (totally ironic) and throught Newcastle Channel to Dep bay. or go around either one would take massive time (cut the route to half sailings all day) and would require more fuel. Duke Point is just closer.

Re Duke Point terminal: If False Narrows wasn't a narrows & wasn't shallow, and if there was a wide passage between Gabriola & Mudge & Valdes, then it would be quicker for the Mid-Island Express route to go from Duke Point to Tsawwassen.
I've just got to figure out a way to move a few islands out of the way.....and there'd be a shorter route, without having to sail around the northern end of Gabriola.
Oh, to have that power.....

Yeah that would be nice. But wouldn't the people on Gabriola be happier with going to Departure Bay instead of Duke Point? Because DPB is pretty much still in Downtown Nanaimo and maybe 20-30 minute walk to Port Place mall though (used to be Harbour Park Mall) but you don't need to go and spend a bunch of money on a shuttle bus from Duke Point, but if it's at DPB you would have the option of either walking or taking the transit

Better for it to just stay where it is going right to downtown, refurbish the downtown dock.

Yeah I agree, Gabriola to downtown Naniamo is the best route for Gabriola. The most convieniant.
