From February 14 - 18, 2005 berth one at Swartz Bay terminal will be closed to replace the lower apron pins. During this time, vessels on the Swartz Bay - Tsawwassen route will utilize berth two.
Customers may experience some minor delays at peak periods. Utilizing berth two means single lane unloading and loading of some commercial and over height vehicles.
We thank-you for your patience as we complete this essential maintenance work on berth one. We look forward to resuming our regular loading pattern as soon as possible.
Service notice from BC Ferries
I thought berth 2 was a double lane ramp, I am pretty sure it is but I dont think it is as wide as berth 1 which means some big trucks they would have let off one by one.
This will mean the SOVI will have to use berth 2. Berth 1 is the main berth for the Tsawwassen ferries

I thought the Spirits used Berth 5 because there's another post on that message board saying this: BC Ferries Service Notice: Issued December 31, 2004 As part of the berth two rebuild project, berth one at Tsawwassen Terminal will be closed from January 4 - March 16, 2005. During this time work will be completed to realign dolphins, which are part of the docking structure, located between the berths. Berth one is primarily used as a lay-up berth in the winter months. During the closure Tsawwassen vessels will use berths three, four and five. While the berth one closure is not expected to impact customer service, passengers will see ongoing construction as we work to improve the infrastructure at Tsawwassen Terminal. One of those posts has to be wrong, which is it?

at swartz bay the spirits use berth 1. at tsawwassen they use berth 5. berth 2 at swartz bay is two lanes wide but because of a tight turn underneath the upper cardeck ramps this makes it tight for 2 commercial vehicles coming off at the same time. when the skeena is in this berth they unload 2 lanes at a time unless it is a commercial vehicle then just one at a time

Yes the Spirit ships use berth 1 at Swartz Bay and berth 5 at Tsawwassen. Berth 1 at Tsawwassen is one of the original two berth and are not double ramped. So basically the SOVI ties up in berth 1 overnight so she will have to use berth 2, Queen of Saanich in berth 3, Bowen in 4 and Mayne in 5. I am assuming the only ships right now at Tsawwassen overnight would be the Queen of Vancouver probably in berth 5 and the Queen of New West in berth 3. hmm, only two ships at Tsawwassen overnight, thought there would be more. Maybe Esquimalt if she aint up at Naniamo yet.

Yup, the Nanny is based out of Long Harbour. Swartz Bay is actully more full than Tsawwassen overnight with all 4 berths occupied.

Does anyone know if they're double ramping Berth 1 and 2? Or are they just replacing the current one ramp?

Today I saw the SOVI as she was about 15 mins out from Swartz Bay. She came in around piers island, which is the way that the S class depart when they leave Swartz Bay and go out around the island. She was coming in that way because I just realized that is the easiest way because she would have to swing into berth 2. Coming from the regular route into Swartz Bay it would be a bit more difficult. I know the V class come in between the two islands and they can swing in but the SOVI is alot bigger so I guess that is the easiest way. I dident see what way she went when she left. Probably out the same way around piers island or maybe the way the V class go out between the two islands.

Just FYI the SOVI is running the opposite route she usually runs. This is due to the Berth 1 closure. She normally comes in past Swartz Bay and swings into berth 1, departs and heads out around peirs island. This week she has been doing the opposite. She comes in from Tsawwassen around peirs island swings into berth 2 and departs and turns right and goes out past Swartz Bay the way she usually comes in. Just FYI. That is how things are going this week while berth 1 is closed.
